Guest guest
Housing Tenants Complain Of Roaches, Mold WSBtv.com - Atlanta,GA http://www.wsbtv.com/news/11011900/detail.html ATLANTA -- Tenants at Lithonia's Housing Authority say they are living in life-threatening and deplorable conditions and they want something done about it. State and county housing officials are touring the homes to get a better idea on how bad the conditions are. Residents here have complained about mold in their homes, old heating units that emit carbon monoxide and a nasty infestation of roaches. " We clean them out and give it 10 minutes and they're right back, " said housing tenant, Shannika Grant. No matter where you look inside Grant's Lithonia housing unit, roaches are everywhere. They're in the medicine cabinet, all over where her children's toothbrushes are, you can find them in the fridge and even in Grant's 15-month-old child's drinking cups. " It's juice where roaches have gotten in. You leave it out, whatever you leave out, " Grant explained. And it's not just roaches. Lithonia housing tenants have long complained about excessive mold causing health problems and old heaters that emit dangerous carbon monoxide. Local and government housing officials came out to inspect and document resident's concerns. Grant hopes they can finally help her get rid of the roaches and mold so she can improve her and her children's living conditions. " It's not safe for people to live like this. It's not sanitary for people to live like this, " said Grant. A housing official wouldn't say what would come out of the inspection. A contractor who works with the housing authority says not all of the units are as infested as the one we saw and said it's the tenants responsibility to keep the units bug-free.
