I bought some L-glutamine to try, 500 mg capsules was smallest dose I

could find and I found out something....don't take them in the late

afternoon or evening. I took one at 5 pm and didn't sleep all night

long. A little searching on internet and found someone said she

recommends to 'her patient's that they not take any after 4 pm due to

it's energizing effect, so IF I try one again it will be early in the

a.m. I may try lower dose also. It made me feel VERY alert indeed

all the way from 5 pm until 7 am this morning. After that I felt like

a dog. Can't wait until bedtime.

Barb, I'm so sorry about that. I learned that the hard way too. Had I

known you were going to try it, I would have shared that. I also seem

to remember that there is a different effect when taken with or

without food. I think without affects the brain more, although I

honestly don't remember. I took it in a powder which I mixed in water,

but I am sure capsules are fine too.

I think that the metabolism for many different amino acids is screwed up in

mold illness. I haven't had any experience with glutamine.

Barb, when you do it, like you did with this one, why do you change the

subjects of threads?

1.) Because my post was about glutamine and not other amino acids

2.) Because it's my post and I can call it whatever I want to.

This is really getting very weird. People modify subject lines all

the time and the subject line is supposed to reflect the post so that

people can find and read what interests them, so people who are taking

glutmine or who are interested in taking it may find and read and

maybe reply to this post. * 101*

I LOVE l-GLUTAMINE - it's giving me my life back and I have lost 35 pounds on

it. It's great for kidneys and mold f*ed mine up really badly.

I'll tell you if I'm ever getting sleepy behind the wheel, I'd like to

have some on hand. I think it makes me more alert than coffee.

Interesting!

Well, it was rather interesting to me. I've taken it and I don't remember

such effects. I wanted to see if there is a valid reason for when you take

it. Try reading this article from 1999 and see what you think about the

benefits vs any possible side effects.

http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag99/sep99-report3.html

I also found research reports going back to 1990 about it's benefits, but I

doubt that anyone has done any clinical research on it concerning those of

us exposed to mold for long periods. If so, I haven't found it yet. I'm

going to postulate that there may be some other underlying factor

contributing to sleepless nights. I would guess that the benefits pretty

well trump any side effects. Biff Byrum

Biff, thanks for the link. I wasn't suggesting a person not take

it. I was just warning people that I had this affect and also read

to not take it in the evening due to it's energizing effect may be

disruptive to some people's sleep.

I <<do>> also have sleep that is easily disturbed but I know for

sure in this case it was from the L-glutamine for I took it for 3

days and could describe those other two days but shortened the

report to just the one day, time I took it and result. Some people

are very good sleepers and some have opposite affects than others.

I had a grandmother who used to drink coffee at bedtime and didn't

bother her.

Scroll down to the warning on this page from lef:

<http://www.lef.org/newshop/items/item00345.html>

I also was interested in it due to other things I read at from this

site which I like to read at:

You guys really should pick up Braverman's book on amino acids.. I

forget its (the books) name but he is a research scientist and doctor who

has also done a decent amount of research on amino acid metabolism and its

written with the nonscientific reader in mind.

He also has a TV show on NPR for older people who want to help their

health..he's a real artist as far as those shows go.. I have seen it a few

times and I was amazed by how many great suggestions he works into his

shows.. he's the real deal.

He's a very smart guy as TV doctors go...his advice is right on...

BTW, because amino acids are PROTEINS often they need to be taken in

significant amounts, by themselves if they are not to be used just as

protein.

in other words, taking one capsule a day of amino acid x on top of an

adequate diet is unlikely to make much of a difference being that aa x is

often already abundant in food..

OTOH, taking them alone on an empty stomach, in adequate amounts, can often

help specific things.. esp. if the ability to digest things properly is

broken.. (i.e. illness)
