KMOV St. Louis

(KMOV) -- Something could be growing in a favorite breakfast food

and you might not know it until it makes you sick.

You can't see the culprit, but mold may be growing in some of the

dry goods sitting on your kitchen shelf.

Pancake batter

The latest warning circulating is about expired pancake mix

triggering severe allergic reactions in people with allergies or

asthma.

No particular brand is to blame.

Experts say dry goods like pancake, biscuit or cake mixes can grow

mold because they're stored in boxes and exposed to moisture.

News 4 Health Team Reporter Manzo interviewed Dr Stauder about

this topic. He says that St. Louis is one of the top cities in the

country when it comes to near-fatal asthma attacks.

He says reactions from eating mold though are rare and treatable.
