Guest guest
So happy for you that you got a Dr that listened and understood and more importantly helped! Glad your BP is back down. Will be praying for you Peggy Subject: Scared out of my mind! To: Hugs-N-Pain Date: Wednesday, December 17, 2008, 1:03 PM Man o man. It's been an interesting few days for me. A few nights ago I noticed my pulse acting strange...and started taking my blood pressure again. It want really really bad. My blood pressure got into the real red zone and my heart beat was so irregular I got plenty scared. After a couple of days of this and my BP close to 200 over 117 and premature beats every few heartbeats I called my doctors office and she said go to ER. Man...a painer in an ER! Last thing I ever wanted to do! You know how they treat painers. Well...we use what is called " Urgent Care " with the particular hospital my insurance uses. They are smaller then a typical ER and not connected to the hospitals. They are scattered around the Reno area so you can get to them pretty fast. You're not gonna believe this. I was treated wonderfully. *disbelief* *gasp* I was seen really quick...reassured before being called in...and guess what....they have a tv set in the treatment room so you can watch while you wait so you can relax some...I was still so scared. You ever hear of that?!? That was a big wow for me. I went in for the high blood pressure and strange pulse and did not complain of the pain....A PA saw me there and we went over my history and pain history and my BP was really up there....we did a 12 lead EKG. My pain has reached such a constant state and I was trying to control on what I had without complaining. That was a big mistake. My pain had gotten into such a constant state I stopped knowing when I may be ok and not so ok. It was like all blended together. The PA concluded it was all from pain. The PVC's were from body stress from pain and BP was high because of it. The Tylenol #3's were not doing it well but I was really afraid to complain to anyone that it was getting really hard to control things. I was chasing pain around without adequate meds to cover a day and night at all. 3 Tylenol #3's in a 24 hour period....not much. I still have a low tolerance. I just felt lucky that I had any treatment at all. I explained this to the PA and he understood the poor treatment we all get and how we're not trusted to be honest and drug seeking etc.. He prescribed Percocet to start right away. He wanted me to make an appointment with my doc and get adequate pain management and meanwhile use two percocets every 4 to 6 hours so I started them last night and the blood pressure started dropping almost right away. By morning the pulse went regular. That is this morning as I write. If anyone ever says that pain cannot kill you....slap 'em. It can. It can leave you stroked out. Anyway...I'm writing up everything for my doctor...all the vital signs from when I started taking them...what the PA said. The pain meds he prescribed and the pharmacy I got them from which is different from my routine pharmacy that gives me the Tylenol #3's. I wrote out names, pharmacy, addresses, meds...all of it and will give it to my Primary doc. That way everyone knows everything even the pharmacies. When and how much Percocets I took which is every four hours one or two...enuff of this brave, tuff it out crap. That's gonna kill me someday. This urgent care unit treated me with such care and respect I plan to send them a Christmas card thanking them. The PA and I talked about how CPer's are treated and this guy just said he really understood that and knows I'm not a druggie and not to worry at all. Then told me what to call 911 for should symptoms of severe headache happen or chest pain. Wow...these guys were tops. Anyway...my Primary and I will have to work out a new pain management. The PA at the Urgent Care and I talked about the possibility of using a drug like Oxycontin or MScontin with break thru meds for pain management. We'll see. It'll be up to my primary. I hope he doesn't send me to a pain doc....I like working with him as I have been for the last 10 years. I'm just so glad the Blood Pressure is down and my heart beat is back to a normal beat. Take care guys. Merry Christmas. Guest guest
I just this minute got back from my doctor after my urgent care visit. My blood pressure is still hiking back up when the pain meds wear off. The BP goes down for awhile then crawls right back up. Like I told him...I'm only chasing the pain with the T#3's and quite frankly, we ain't got enough of the stuff to do that and I don't want a stroke. He told me the PVC's were caused by the pain. The stress on everything and all. I have now been put on MSCONTIN and I can keep my T#3's for breakthru. But we have to do something to keep this pain lowered in a more consistent manner and oxycontin or mscontin seem the best to do this with because of the timed release. There is no question in anyone's mind anymore that pain is the cause of all of this. I've always been such a tuffy about pain most of my life. This is all really weird for me. I just took my first dose. It's the lowest Morphine dose possible for the one of the contin type drugs which is fine. We are going to find out how a continuous dose of opiates help keep the BP down. Yes...it is scary. I told my doc how I don't ever think my diastolic blood pressure was ever over a 100 and he showed me it had been. *sigh* To me it's just too dangerous to have it like that day after day after day. I'm getting too scared of getting a stroke. My BP has a normal of 120's to 130's over 70's or 80's and this getting close to 200 is NOT acceptable. At least the guy at urgent care was someone outside of the office who figured it was the pain that was out of control and my pain management not doing the job. The doc talked about Cymbalta or something like that for fibro but the fibro, quite honestly, has gotten secondary to the other crap. So...long acting narcs to see if we can keep this BP out of the red zone is something new to try. Cross your fingers for me.... I'm not, by nature, hypertensive. Having your own blood pressure cuff is good to have. If you don't have one you may consider getting one. You can follow your body's reaction to pain. I had no idea my body's reaction to my pain was getting so out of control. Those irregular heart beats surprised the heck out of me tho and now I know the pain can cause them. That's a new twist for me. I hope you and your doctor can work something out. It's bad enough to hurt but being scared on top of it is nuts. Don't wanna do that. I'll sure keep you posted about how this is working for me. I want it to work so badly. Good luck to you. Guest guest
(I hope this posts. I've been a member for months and tried, because you need to read this). You said you're worried. Well hon, I am VERY worried for you. I used to go through what you did all the time. I think the worst was when my BP got to 280 over 220. When your BP is high or you complain of chest problems they usually take you right away. I wound up having a mild stroke from it. If you have that kind of pain going on the T3 or even Percocet are not going to do the trick. I won't go into my problems, but I use a 100 duragesic patch, 15 mg of pillsfor the break-through and still have to use muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatory. I pray you don't have to wait the way I did for a pain control doc., but I had 2 and 1/2 months of hell before I was seen. And in between my BP would start the vicious cycle every couple of weeks. Good luck! Jeanne (if this goes through I'll try an intro next. (lol). > > Man o man. It's been an interesting few days for me. Guest guest
The Percocets brought it down right away and the PVC's went away. I saw my primary within' two days and he put me on MSCONTIN and keeping the T#3's for breakthru pain and to keep the BP down. No one waited and I'm very fortunate to, first, have a primary that does care and waits for no one. He just wasn't there that day I called...so I went to the urgent care. That PA that saw me saw the problem very well and didn't hesitate to get me that percocet while I was getting to my primary. They brought down the BP right away and stopped the PVC's. My primary said that the pain can cause the PVC's to happen. I guess I can understand that now. The stress on the body must be really something to cause your heart to go so irregular. So far...and it's early....the MSCONTIN with my regulars are keeping things where they should be. Both the Urgent care and my doctor treated this as a serious development and no one waited at all. My primary said he wanted to see me in about two weeks....and I will...to make sure it is working the way he wants it to. I am very fortunate to have a doctor who will not wait and to have seen a PA who made sure I had the meds to bring it down and hold it stable until my doctor and I could get things on the right track. I was amazed after my first night on the MSCONTIN. lol...I woke up and looked at the clock and it said 6am. That is instead of 1am and 2am and 3am and so forth. Gads!!!! I slept thru the night and my blood pressure was 127/62. Wow...that's new for me anymore. I actually slept. I've been just hangin' tight for so long and just grateful for any kind of treatment I had going that I forgot things were getting worse. He NEVER would have waited no 2 1/2 months. No way. My primary is my pain doc. I don't want anyone else. He's the first to have believed me and treated me and taken me seriously. Thank you so much for your letter and being worried for me. With PA's like the one I saw...there has to be hope for us painers in emergency pain situations. He was very worried for me and was so on the ball about the pain and I didn't even complain about the pain....just the bp and irregular heart beats...he picked up on the rest after he knew my history. Bless his heart. I'm so sorry you had to have a stroke. There has to be legal ramifications for waiting so long before you got treatment to prevent it from happening. I was scared to death about that and had pictures of my kids finding me all paralyzed or something like that.
