Guest guest
Hi Cheryl No I iwll never do that again. Yes I was addicted to feeling less pain and being able to get through my day almost perfectly. Iowned my own school at the time and I had to feel well so much and could not let go of the pills..I iwll never do thatagain. I was told I should have weaned myself off of them slowly. I was so very ill for at least a month...I am not sure which pain you are suffering from but I hope that your doctor will help you to feel better. I think most people do not appreciate how very lucky they are to feel well. I fight off self pity but some days it is just not easy. Anyways one day at a time hopefully we will all feel better. cherie Subject: Re: Cherie on going cold turkey!... Guest guest
Very, very good advice!! I thought of it last night. You should NEVER have had to go off cold turkey. You should have expressed your fears of addiction to your doctor and had him take you down a little at a time. There are other options for pain management that are non opiate. People have died doing that. The body goes into a real upheaval. I used to withdraw addicts and we do it so there is no pain at all. And if you are an addict, of course, use support systems for that. I consider myself medically dependent because the pain and spasm is too much for me to deal with. I want a life where I can walk and sit....not lie in bed wishing it were over. That is NOT addiction. Tolerance is not addiction. If you are truly an addict it can transfer to something else so you have to look at the addiction as a process. Not just the drug. Ex heroin addicts have actually been able to do pain management because they had to...and keep it in control. But they are in a very good recovery program. Guest guest
Thanks for your reply. I dont consider myself an addict..I was in such pain that I ached to feel well...I went about it in a stupid way and I went cold turkey. I felt I had nobody to talk to who who would understand me. Of course I would never do this again ever. I am very careful with any meds I take today and I am doing better..somedays are worse than others but I get through them. I work out with a personal trainer 4 times a week to relieve my pain and it really helps..better than swallowing a pill...cherie > From: Dollykayeaol (DOT) com <Dollykayeaol (DOT) com> > Subject: Re: Cherie on going cold turkey!... > To: Hugs-N-Pain@ yahoogroups. com > Date: Monday, December 8, 2008, 4:53 PM > In a message dated 12/8/2008 3:15:48 P.M. Guest guest
Hi there, A note on pain management. My dr. has me on 60 tabs percocet every 15 days which is 4 tabs per day for two years. Under no circumstances will she refill early. My dilemma: Case 1., my neighborhood was vandalized by two teenagers and I was unable to find my percocet - along with gift cards to cabalas and items that young kids might steel. So last month I had no choice but to go to another dr. to receive medication (vicodin which is not as strong but was better than nothing). Case 2., I was shopping at the mall and left my bag and purse on the bench for less than a minute and someone stole them. Once again I had to go to another dr. to obtain medication. Unfortunately, the dr. whom had prescribed me the vicodin refused me treatment and got extremely angry and treated me horribly. I then went to another physician who was able to help but had me sign a release form that will allow her to ask the state to report to her all my medications. I am now in terrible fear that my original dr. will be informed and stop all my medications. This is no way to live. Dr.'s start you on pain management but then refuse you help in the above situations. It is not right as the withdrawal is unbearable cold turkey. Typing is difficult for me (I have three bulging discs in my neck with pinched nerves and case unbearable pain, shooting dagger pain and numbness) I have been forces to change jobs - from Executive Assistant to a sales position as that is the only job I can do that does not require the use of my arm. I have made substantial changes in my life style - example, cut my hair very short because I can't style it, household chores do not get done as much because of pain, I even decided I was not able to have children because I am afraid I won't be able to tend to them as needed. Every part of my life has been affected. This only brings me back to the point I was trying to make that now on top of everything, I have to worry about being reported as a drug abuser and losing the only thing that helps me live a somewhat normal life. I am with out a doubt, the most very depressed and scared person I know. Does anyone out there share with me this fear and depression? Is there anyone who can relate to my situation? Can anyone give me words of encouragement or help to subdue my fears? If so, please write back. I come to you now for help, support, encouragement, legal information, and advice. Sincerely, Cat > > > From: Dollykayeaol (DOT) com <Dollykayeaol (DOT) com> > > Subject: Re: Cherie on going cold > turkey!... > > To: Hugs-N-Pain@ yahoogroups. com > > Date: Monday, December 8, 2008, 4:53 PM > > In a message dated 12/8/2008 3:15:48 P.M. Guest guest
They just may not buy it. Really. Those excuses are already well used...probably even the dog ate them. My doc really knows me and if they were stolen I'd have to talk to him about it and hope he understands and trusts me. We did have an incident once where the pharmacy lost a whole bottle...but we were able to work it out ok and I did get my script. One mistake was seeing another doctor without the first doctors knowledge...that constitutes doctor shopping for " extra " meds. If the first doc knew nothing about your other doc that would probably fall under deceit. I don't how that would go legally. When I had another script everyone was on the same page. It was due to oral surgery and the dentist didn't me to use the regular pain management drugs and they both knew the story as it should be. Second...you NEVER sit your stuff down at a mall or store. Mine goes into my fanny pack next to my body under a shirt. They're gonna have to fight me hand to hand and I pray those years in tai kwon do pay off. If they break into my home and I'm there. They're gonna get shot. If I'm not, they're gonna play hell finding them. It's good to figure out the worst that will happen and prepare for it. I don't talk about my meds to anyone. That's an invite to a big problem. How you live with this is walk a very straight line with your doc and be very careful. Sitting a bag down at a mall...many people wouldn't do that. It's not even natural. Many like me carry stuff that is close to the body like a fanny pack. It just makes a harder target for crooks. Man...I dunno. You may have to fess up. Guest guest
You are right to a degree. However, I find your response carrying the same tone that I was treated with by a certain physician. I suppose if it comes down to it I will have to explain what has happenened but these situations happen to people in all walks of life no matter what. I have had my purse stollen - my car broken into, my house... this is not some sort of cop out - it just happens. I supppose walking two feet to throw away a napkin without thinking in that 2 seconds someone would steel from me was niave, but like I said, these things happen all the time... the way the economy is now stealing is becoming a way of life for many and I need to be a whole lot more aware. As far as needing to get med's to carry me threw, I can't afford to go through the withdrawal right now - it sounds like this is something you are not familiar with or you would not be so harsh with your responses. I asked for responses from people who can provide support, encouragement and advice, I don't feel as though I received any of those things from you. But thank you for your time and God Bless. > > > > > > > From: Dollykayeaol (DOT) com <Dollykayeaol (DOT) > > com> > > > > Subject: Re: Cherie on going > cold > > > turkey!... > > > > To: Hugs-N-Pain@ yahoogroups. com > > > > Date: Monday, December 8, 2008, 4:53 PM > > > > In a message dated 12/8/2008 3:15:48 P.M. > Central > > > Standard > > > > Time, > > > > cherie22001@ yahoo.com writes: > > > > > > > > I became addicted to painkillers last year > and > > went > > > off > > > > cold turkey and was > > > > violently ill > > > > > > > > > > > > Cherie This is so dangerous! Guest guest
Wasn't trying to be harsh...I just know these docs pretty well. I was a nurse in my other life and have seen it.... and they take it with a lot skepticism. They have their butts on the line and they expect nothing less then the strictness of honesty and if they smell deceit in any way shape or form they get a bit jumpy. A lot jumpy in fact. The DEA is looking at them with a microscope. I'm not judging you at all...it's just how they will look at it. I've seen their wheels in action. I hope it works out well. If and when you talk to her about what happened I can only hope for the best outcome. We live in fear when we havn't done anything " iffy " when we go to get those refills. We are terrified of not getting the renewals. I've been there before I got my disability being treated like a " bad " person...those clinics are horrible. Been there done that. You want advice....be very straight with the doctor. If that fails...it's a chance you take. Others will respond and if it seems harsh...it's not intended to. You'll find others who have had similar experience. Guest guest
You might not like the answer you received but everything shes told you is correct. They don't care what happens to your meds its up to you to keep up with them. The doctors hear these stories everyday and its usually from an addict. Guest guest
Cat, I live in fear all the time when I go in for refills and get the looks from the pharmacists. They just don't understand what we have to go thru. Today I had to get a refill for my perc. which runs out next week, when I will be in Tex. In Tex they will only take a written prescription if it is not for a narcotic. So I asked my doc about something lower dose that the Army pharmacy would refill today. We ended up putting me on Vicodin, which is not quite cutting the pain, but it is better than going without during a two day drive and then my grandmother's 90th bday party and then Christmas with the family. Could you imagine all that with no pain meds?? It would be miserable not only for me, but them too. So keep your chin up and yak at me if you need or any of us....we leave on Thurs (I hope) and I am taking our laptop, so I will keep in touch during my trip. Tomorrow is baking, they have all requested that I bring my pumpkin bread that I make for Christmas, and that's about at least 7 loaves....but I love doing it! Talk to me anytime, Lynn Lynn Latham blue_texasgal@... lynnlatham@... " I Don't Do Mornings " ________________________________ To: Hugs-N-Pain Sent: Tuesday, December 9, 2008 1:59:41 PM Subject: Re: Cherie on going cold turkey!... Guest guest
I am not sure what state all of you live in, but I am in Ga. my mama and me both see different Pain Management dr's. and last month. we both had to do drug test something new that has been started on Ga. I have never had to do this or sign a contract with my Dr. I heard his tech on the phone on day talking with a patient and she was telling him he had broken the contract that he had signed between the Dr and the man. The dr's are really tighten down. my MIL used to dr hop and pharmacy hop to. she never got caught to my knowledge but that was before everything was on computers. if for some reason I see another dr. I am up front with them right off about my pain meds. If I lost them I fear to think what my life would be like. Guest guest
I did NOT mean to imply that anyone was Dr. hopping. and even though as a nurse I don't believe it is right. Since I have started having all these problems I have to say I understand it much more. in my area. pain management dr's are a fairly new thing. so, to be given enough pain meds to take 3 a day for 30 days was pretty much unheard of. Guest guest
Hi Lynn....I had an experience a few years ago I would like to share. I live in Texas, and was living in Denton at the time. I had run out of my pain meds, and my pain doc was out of town, so I went to the ER, stayed the obligatory 5 or 6 hours, and the ER doc gave me enough until my pain doc was available. I took the script to the store..I wont mention it, but it starts with CVS....and dropped it off. I went back 2 hours later, and the pharmacist told me that since I had had so and so filled, he labled me a drug seeker, called the hospital and talked to the ER doc, and had my scripts cancelled. I was livid! I told him the circumstances, and that I was a chronic pain sufferer, but it didnt do any good. I was dialing CVS's 1-800 number as I was walking out of the store. Came to find out that he was someone they had pulled in,so he didnt know his customers. The head honcho over this area of pharmacists drove to Denton, and fired the guy. By then I had transferred all of my scripts to Walgreen's. SOmeone is going to have to enlighten people that a lot of us NEED these meds, and we dont like taking them..we NEED to take them. I hope you have a safe journey to my beautiful state. What part will you be visiting? Guest guest
When I had that Percocet filled when I went to the Urgent Care last week, I went to a totally different pharmacy. I like my regular pharmacist a lot and they are good to me but I didn't need anything like what you went thru or them calling to make sure I was on the up and up...so..I just went to another stating it was closet to the Urgent Care. That gave me time to explain to my doctor, as I would be seeing him within a couple of days...and to tell what pharmacist I used to fill the percocet. It was all to get that blood pressure down to a same level. I couldn't afford any misunderstanding. My doctor has all the records from the Urgent Care and all is well..no surprises. If that had happened to me and I had a stroke from the blood pressure...boy...someone would be in trouble. This instant diagnosis of doctor shopping and drug seeker is such a bad thing. OF COURSE we're drug seeking. No duh!! I have no trouble saying I NEED the drugs. I do. It's that or be in big trouble. Pain causes physical problems we don't need. Guest guest
I always use the same pharmacy for my pain meds. one reason is should I need something called in my Dr likes everything at the same pharmacy. and there are these people that give us a really bad name. I have taken in scripts and my ins say it was a day or so to early and so way the pharmacist would get it to go through. Ever thing has a system it is just a matter if that person wants to go that extra mile for you. I had a pharmacist fill my long-lasting with short- acting and tried to argue with him. but it was impossible, so I had to get another appt with my dr. and get another script to get it straightened out. as I was walking out the pharmacist made the statement that he won that one and got rid of me. so like you I just made a stop and requested the manager an explained what had happened and I never saw that pharmacist again.
