To Donnie and anyone else this might affect-I had a very similar experience as Lotsacats a year ago. I had been seeing a Primary trained in Hawaii who was open to alternative medicine, which I am interested in. We worked as a team for several years. At that point I was out of a wheelchair, carefully active, and for the first time in years, I would go for hours at a time WITHOUT PAIN. It was wonderful! And then I moved. We had booked a Primary in Louisville so that I would not run out of meds. When I saw the Lou. Prime she no longer prescribed the level I used NO MATTER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES. She was sympathetic, but explained she would not lose her license just for me. She made an appointment for me with a pain clinic, which I could not see for TWO AND A HALF MONTHS. To hurry this story along, in that time I looked for other doctors,(with BP rising), tried to find strong enough herbal tenures to help me (they don't exist here) and went to the ER several times, to no avail, as my BP increased with my pain. My old Prime had prepared a short copy of my history, explaining the dire need of my duragesic patches and other pain killers, but when I went in the docs refused to read them, saying they didn't have time. A couple of times I came away from an 8 hour wait with ibuprofen! And my BP got higher and higher. My BP finally got to an impossible number. My ears were ringing and I had chest pains. As they usually do when my BP is high they took me right away, but AGAIN AS USUAL, tried to treat the BP, and not the pain. When it wouldn't go down to even 250 over 150, (it had been 300 someover something),they finally gave me a shot, and it started down immediately. I was given a minimum dosage of pills until my Pain Management could see me. After I left the hospital I had trouble for months concentrating, and my hands would shake for no reason. I was given a physical that summer and told I had most probably suffered a mild stroke. I agree with Lotsacats. Don't mess around with it! The stronger our pain, the more stress is put on our body. Good Luck To All! Jeanne
Guest guest
Mine didn't get that high but enuff to scare me into action. I was so fortunate to have had the PA who acted so promptly and professionally. What I'd like to know is...do we have any legal recourses. Anybody in first year medical school would know that pain raises blood pressure and high blood pressures cause strokes and heart problems. I mean...that is serious stuff. Is this case I see a case of negligence. I'm not a law-suit-happy person by a long shot but by the same token they help keep some people on their toes. If someone is negligent by acts of omission, can you go after them? Also...who is going to take away a doctors license who treats pain. You have a history and treatment...you are not someone just off of the streets. I think it's a lot of hooey for someone to say they will loose their license over pain treatment unless they really stupid. I think asking this doctor who would take the license and then contacting those people yourself as to why you must be put in danger due to threatening doctors...and make it loud and clear. We won't get changes unless we make a big fat fuss. Ask her who is going to remove her license and where to get a hold of them for more information...that may call her bluff if there is one. A blood pressure that high is dangerous and a doctor leaving you in danger because they afraid for their license? She should be afraid if she doesn't treat you properly to get that blood pressure down. I think we need to be firm about being given blood pressure meds for blood pressure caused by pain and that is also a misuse of drugs. That emergency Percocet dropped it like a hot rock...and my follow up with my doctor is keeping it within reason. This morning it was 116/66. Much more like it. It's between 150/80 and 116/66. Not too bad. I think these are good questions to ask those in the know...and never let another doctor use it to be negligent. Information is one our best weapons against this type of thing. Telling these stories to the people who give out the license may be interesting. As an X nurse...I can't see anyone doing that without being called on negligence. Guest guest
Believe me, I have thought about a large group of people coming together to fight this for years! How about every time I have to bite my lip to keep from telling off another smug and conceited doctor.! Or all the times I tried to be " assertive " with my doctor, only to be told I wasn't an M.D. and do as I was told. LOL! Before Louisville I used to carefully screen my doctors when I wasn't traveling. We all have our horror stories, right? Mmm..we have a nurse, pointing toward Lotacats. I was a Homeschool Advocate for the years my own children were of school age. I am also a writer, and did work as a newswriter, eons ago. Any other takers on this long road? I DO remember when I was an advocate we had to do endless research, and know exactly what we were talking about, as well as emassing hundreds (in this case we're talking hundreds of thousands) of cases of abuse and neglect. It becomes your life, but then isn't that what we do now? I believe if we don't do something soon, it will eventually become almost impossible to get the help we need. But then again, isn't it already? Jeanne > > Mine didn't get that high but enuff to scare me into action. Guest guest
There's people like the American Pain Foundation to help the problem with undertreated pain.  http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3689/is_/ai_n9124846 This artical is where a health professional is asking about risk of being sued for not treating pain well....they are worried about it. Nice to know some are thinking about it.  http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3689/is_/ai_n9124846 Pain...and effects on the rest of your body and mind.  I've been meaning to bring up the question in the Chronic Pain Connection. You can usually get some interesting answers there.  But...we do write to congressman/senators and others to keep them aware we need laws to protect us. A lot of this has brought up new pain laws in our favor. These are a few things we can do to help...and keep at our illustrious law makers till they " get it " . Get involved in some of the organizations that work for painers. Guest guest
The information is much appreciated. I will be going to the sites for a look. If nothing else for the new year I will be committing to taking a firmer approach to my treatment. And may we always find sympathetic doctors when we need them! Guest guest
I couldn't agree more. 've had numerous doctors get P.O.ed that I would dare ask questions about my own body and what certain medications might do to me. A few are surprised and pleased, but especially here in Ky., they are far more likely to act like they feel I'm either a threat or trying to undermine their authority. I'm not satisfied with either my pain doctor and my primary and am looking for alternates with both. To tell you the truth I'm afraid my pain control doctor will be nabbed for something the way they operate. They see (to me anyway), huge numbers of people, and merely write prescriptions. When I first went to him I told he and the nurse that I take a heavily concentrated herb that I prepare myself. No problem, he told me. I repeated the herb's name and told him that this herb could counteract with other medicines. I said I understand, he told me a little impatiently and went on to prescribe a muscle relaxer. The herb I mentioned can act as a muscle relaxer, and if I had used both, I'm sure I would've had a problem. The herb can act as a natural Valium. Guest guest
Hi Donnie; I am so sorry you are in pain. I wish I could tell you a good doctor, but I'm looking myself. I am very lucky that my insurance pays 75%. I don't know what I would do otherwise. It's not fair, but you have to get your Primary to " recommend " you to your Pain Management doctor. They will not see you otherwise. Yes, I also asked for a cancellation and the call never came. Some might work with scheduling more once you're seen the first time. I've been telling this PM doctor that my treatment wasn't working for almost a year now, and he always tells me to " try it " until next time. When I first saw him he told me I " had so much going on with my body " his only goal was to lower my pain level by 50%. When I told him it wasn't okay with me, he shrugged. Short Term; If you can go to an emergency room anywhere but Louisville, do it! If you have to use Louisville, you might try the U.of L. back clinic.I haven't used it, but I've had others say they helped. When you go to the emergency room ask them what you can do or if they can recommend someone. (Not here), but I've found several good doctors that way. If you can find someone in Owensboro, go for it! I don't want to take up for them, but Louisville doctors really do see a huge amount of addicts showing some the same symptoms we do. And they are overworked. Other than that..a hot bath, muscle cream, heating pad, liquor (if you're not taking pain pills), or even pot. I'm sorry! I hope any of this helps Jeanne > > > > > > > > Mine didn't get that high but enuff to scare me > > > into action.
