Group,

Here's an excellent article by a respected lab on one of the many

variables of mold sampling: The type of growth media in the culture

plate.

Use Both MEA and DG-18 for Culturing Fungi

By Dr. Florence Wu, Aemtek, Inc.

One of the most important aspects of sampling and analyzing

culturable fungi is selection of media. [snip]

Carl,

I noticed that there is a discussion going on over on iequality about the

Air-O-Cell cartridges and their shortcomings when it came to catching the

smaller diameter spores such as aspergillus/penicillium type, at various

pump volumes.

It bothers me that many people use this method but don't disclose that it is

bound to be very inaccurate with spores of small diameter.. which mean that

many aspergillus/peniillium spores - evidently, just sail through them???

At least that is what I am gathering...

Also, I'm looking for a good article that gives a summary of spore trap

sampling methodologies and appropriateness. Would you know of a good article

on the uses and limitations of spore trap sampling to sample for mold

spores?

I've heard again and again that spore sampling can be used to show

situations where there is active mold growth, but that it should not be used

to show that a job is completed, especially when stachybotrys is involved.

But, given that most clients don't seem to ever want to spend more than a

few hundred dollars at most determining if a building is safe, what ARE

people supposed to use?
