My volunteer agency almost always runs 3-person trucks, usually 2 medics and a non-med driver (except weekdays when we run short-handed on multiple runs). This arrangement consistently gives us two sets of hands in the back, no matter how minor or severe the situation, or how many patients we need to transport. the usual crew composition is Paramedic/Basic or Intermediate/Basic with a non-med or certified driver.

My career agency (private provider) runs 2-person crews, dispatching a second unit if lifting assistance is necessary. Many times, we get caught short-handed, and are forced (frequently) to enlist the assistance of bystanders or facility staff in order to load or unload.

Give me that 3rd crew member ANY day!
