Michele H-

Aubrie had a swallow study done at our children's hospital when she was

a few months old. My ST did one recently on a young infant at a local

hospital. From what she said, Aubrie's test was done well and this

other recent one was not.

Aubrie's test was done with her in a tumbleforms seat (comfortable and

appropriate positioning for her at the time) with the Xray tech, the ST,

and me all present. We gave her a bottle with the barium liquid and

watched her and a real-time video. Then we were able to go back and

review the video over and over again, calling in more people for

opinions if needed. It was very helpful for me (and the ST) to actually

see the results happening real time rather than just getting a report.

The recent test my new ST was involved with was different. They had the

child in some kind of uncomfortable and inappropriate position (can't

recall the details) without mom in the room. The therapist was only

allowed in cuz she insisted. They did not video tape the results, so

there was one opportunity to see what was happening. No chance to go

back and review each step closely.

Maybe the benefit of those 2 very different experiences will help you to

know what to expect. Good luck! We'll all look forward to hearing the

results.

Michele H -

I forgot to mention the tumbleform seat, it was very comfortable, and the

appropriate angle for feeding, it should be okay even for someone as young

as Berkeley. Also, I have to TRIPLE agree with Michele on being in there,

our kids go through enough crap (excuse the term), they need their mom

and/or dad in there with them as they go through these tests and procedures.

I would allow Kennedy to go through NOTHING without me present. Just

remember, you've got rights!
