And with anything else, with constant use you become profeciant. But i geuss they are to good to learn such a thing. Guest guest
-- [ From: Ruth Bartlett Brack * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- I have forgotten who started this thread but here is how I handled it with one DEAR doc. he was doing all his talking with . I interrupted saying " I am not a dog and you are not a vet so talk to me " Sometimes I tell them up front that they talk to me. Other times I reach over and pat them and tell them I would feel better about them if they talked to me and let do the interpreting. People are always wanting to take the easy way doctors are no different they just think they are. Guest guest
Sorry Crew, I for *one* have wondered why those of us who become deafened don't learn the basics of lipreading! Afterall, deafness is *our* problem! It's about as easy for us to learn to lipread as for our drs. and dentists to learn to sign--lol! Strange part is that I have changed all drs and my dentist; still I manage quite nicely *alone* and landers don't speak with the same accent and idiomatic expressions as Virginians. :-) My dentist and all his staff take off their masks so that I can lipread them. Sure there are things that I don't always understand but have enough mouth for 2 sets of teeth and don't hesitate to ask them to pls write what I cannot lipread. Great rapport! Glad that I did not leave my old home without it! Hugs, ie > I understand your frustration but the adage of " you can't teach a dog > new tricks " is true I guess? US OR OUR DOCS?! Guest guest
Hey Pete, it was encouraging to hear someone else say they have tried like the devil and are a lousy lipreader; Same here, I have the tapes, practice, etc. - but I am clueless. And a lousy signer too. But I am getting a hearing dog, so maybe I can learn dog language! Guest guest
right on Pete! I've been struggling with lip reading for 10 years and I'm still terrible at it and it's not from lack of effort. Some people pick it up easier than others. Unforunately I'm not one of them! : ) Don Re: Being " put down " From: PeteEMT@... Guest guest
ie, I very much wanted to learn lip-reading when I first lost my hearing. We live in East Texas, and there is no Deaf services around here that would provide for me to learn. The only choice I had, was to go to a private teacher and she charged very high prices. Since we had lost my income and had 4 kids, we could not afford this. My family and close friends have learned if they slow down their speech some, I can understand them. But, we learned sign language as well. Donna
