Hi this is . Just wanted to share some good news. I have been

trying to find an OTCS specialist and have only been able to find them

on the East Coast. Finally, I have located one in Aurora, CO (I am in

OK but its still closer than the coast) His name is Dr. Oro' and he

runs a Chiari Center that also deals with Syringomelia and TCS/OTCS.

AND not only did I find him but he has agreed to cosult with me as a

self-referral with no insurance!! For those of you with insurance you

may not realize it but it is almost impossible to get in to see a

specialist without it, heck it is even hard to get in to see a family

doc without it! I am soooo excited. I have to gather my films and send

them to him with a small fee and he will examine them and then we can

arrange an appointment. It means a flight, but it will hopefully give

me the evidence (expert opinion) that I need to fight the disability

insurance and social security appeals. Not to mention that if and when

I do get insurance, he also does the minimally invasive surgery..and

they have a pain clinic so maybe they will have some suggestions on how

to deal with this pain until I can have surgery. YAY!!! Some light at

the end of the tunnel!

That is wonderful that you were able to find a MD with the experience you

need, and will see you without insurance. Although it may be hard to find a

specialist that you hand pick that will see you without insurance (unless

you can pay up front), there are ways to get care. For example, if I didn't

have insurance, I could go to the local public hospital (Grady, in Atlanta.

Charity in New Orleans - but closed after Katrina - those are just the only

2 I know of). Public hospitals get subsidies from the county and state to

pay for indigent care (for example, Grady is subsidized by Fulton and DeKalb

counties - even though all of metro Atl relies on its services - but that' s

another story). If a person were taken to an ER, any hospital has to

stabilize them, but if they require further hospitalization, they will be

transferred to the public hospital for care. If a person is not having

symptoms serious enough to warrant an ER visit, they can always call their

local public hospital info line and get information about how to see one of

their MDs for non-emergency treatment. If there is just a general info # and

the operator doesn't know who to transfer you to, request to speak with

someone in social services or patient advocacy, etc.

Even if someone manages to get treatment at a private hospital, they can

notify the hospital that they are indigent. Then, they will negotiate with

the hospital to either pay a reduced amount or write off the balance

entirely. I'm positive its not the most efficient process or very easy, and

it may take a little time and hard work to see someone, but it is possible.

But I'm so happy that you've found someone to help you. I hope you have a

great consult and think this MD is a good match for you.

I think you are in great hands with Dr. Oro. I have heard he is

wonderful, and he was second on my list to try to see. However, since

I live near Miami, that was my first option, and I had detethering

surgery there this past May.

Good luck with Dr. Oro!
