For RAC officers and everyone involved in developing their region's

Trauma System Plan:

You do not need to develop a trauma system plan component solely for

" Medical Oversight " as listed in rule 157.124.

In an ongoing evaluation of our trauma system plan requirements we

would like to update what we consider to be needed when completing the

" medical oversight " component of your plan. Medical oversight applies

to the involvement of physicians in all aspects of RAC planning,

implementation, and evaluation. It is difficult to write a document

(plan component) addressing only this. It is more appropriate in your

plan to show that physicians have a role in all aspects of medical

care throughout your system. The component for systems quality

assurance (performance review, etc.) is an extremely important

location to document this involvement, however, the role of the

physician should be noted in all components.

Physician involvement to include at least surgeons, emergency

medicine, and EMS medical directors will be evaluated during the RAC

systems evaluation process.

Medical control ( " regional medical control " in rule 157.124) applies

to on-line and off-line physician involvement in EMS's medical care.

While it is not required to have one source of medical control for the

entire TSA, you should review all the medical control resources (on &

off-line) for your region and evaluate their efficacy and/or

shortfalls (i.e. needs assessment).

If we can be of any assistance in your planning or clarify this or any

aspect of your regional trauma system plan, do not hesitate to contact

myself, , or Kathy Perkins.
