Apartment Concerns & Tenant Rights

KBSD - Dodge City,KS

After a lot of complaints from tenants and a closer look from

Eyewitness News, city inspectors showed up at Battin Apartment

Complex Monday morning. Inspectors went through nearly 60 units

looking for code violations and safety concerns.

" This is the slums basically, " said former tenant .

Residents tell us they've been complaining for months but no one

would listen to them. For many, the problems are located in vacant

apartment next door to them. Those empty units have water and

sewage damage and the smell and mold is seeping to occupied

apartments.

" I try and stay away from the house as much as possible, " said

tenant Tierra Baker. Baker is six months pregnant and worried the

odor she smells is mold. She has visible mold throughout her home

but is concerned what she is breathing is from next door.

Inspectors will continue work at Battin over the next few days.

We'll keep you updated on what they find and what improvements will

be done on the property.

Tenant Rights

Knowing your rights as a tenant is the best way to protect yourself.

So, the tenant has the " right to move " and the landlord has the " right " to

evict them for complaining?

Thats what I gathered from the story..
