Two meetings to discuss mold and its effects on human health are

slated this week as parents of some Plantation Elementary School

students continue to search for answers on how to treat their sick

children.

Texas doctor , who has treated some Plantation

students, will lecture tonight about the effects of mold toxins. On

Thursday, the Lafayette Parish School Board is slated to meet to

discuss mold and allergies.

Questions have continued to surface about the effects of mold toxins

after Stachybotrys mold was found in one room on campus and children

reported symptoms including: diarrhea, headaches, stomach aches,

blurred vision, breathing problems and vomiting. In a test that is

not FDA-approved, eight children from Plantation tested positive for

the toxin trichothecene, which Stachybotrys can create. Upon the

insistence of parents, the district tested the entire campus and

cleaned it. The district has not released the results.

Parents Naquin and Belsom aren't taking any chances.

Naquin's daughter, who tested positive for the toxin, is homebound

with plans to enroll in private school. Belsom's two daughters, who

both tested positive, have been transferred to another school.

" It's either doom and gloom or nothing, " Belsom said of medical

sources who report either a worst-case scenario of permanent damage

or that mold can cause allergy problems and little else. " It's

frustrating. "

The director of planning, facilities and maintenance, Bordelon,

said the district has given parents everything they have.

" We've given all the test results and information we've obtained, "

Bordelon said.
