My son has delayed sensation and an anorectal malformation and is on daily laxatives. He is continent, but when he has to go, he HAS to go. For this and other issues due to his congenital malformations, he has a 504 Disability plan set up at school. This is the equivalent of an IEP plan for people with physical disabilities that can affect them at school. The plan is a written agreement signed by myself and the teachers and administators at his school district, and details what his issues are, how they can impact him at school, and what accomodations are necessary for him to have " fair and equal access " to school. His 504 plan states that he is allowed to go to the bathroom at ANY time, even during recess, tests, whatever. The plan with the school allows him to go straight to the nurses office, no questions asked, if he should have an accident. The nurse then informs the teacher that he is with her, so the teacher knows he's not wandering around if he doesn't come right back like he would for a bathroom break, and the nurse calls me to come assist if needed. A spare change of clothing is kept at the nurses in a ziploc bag with 's name on it (privately) for him if he needs it. All the teachers and playground aides know of 's issues, and of his right to do this. He also has orthopedic issues, both from structural problems and nerve issues, that affect his balance and endurance, and the plan allows him to use the elevator to avoid stair mishaps, and it also allows him final say in what he can and cannot do in gym class. It also allows that he be excused without consequence when he is absent from or late to school due to his medical issues. Anyone with a child that has TC and bowel/bladder/leg issues should definitely request a meeting with their school to set up a 504 Disability Plan if they don't have one already. I have a copy of a parent input sheet that can be helpful in gathering your info ahead of any meetings, as an informed parent who already knows what accommodations they want has a better chance of actually getting it Connie Mom to Sara 16, Nicky 10 (GI issues, megacolon), and 8 (CRS/VACTERLS incl. tethered spinal cord (repaired 9/00, 8/06) perineal fistula imperforate anus (repaired 5/00, managed with daily Exlax), single kidney, PDA (closed on its own), malformed pelvis and hemisacrum, long segment lumbosacral levoscoliosis with hemivertebrae (spinal fusion T11-sacrum 8/06), extra left rib, genital anomalies with hypospadius (repairs 9/00,11/00, 5/01,12/01,12/03), hypoplastic left leg with clubfoot (repaired 5/01) tibial torsion and 4.5cm length discrepancy - wears AFO and 3.5cm lift, SUA, GI reflux, DGE/gastroparesis, mild swallowing dysphagia, eating issues and the most beautiful smile ever) conni60640@...
