Window Unit AC, cont.

Hello,

My saga continues with the my window unit AC.

I finally discovered the reason it did not seem

to be working properly. It turns out that, the

fine job of sealing between the unit and unit casing,

with a garage door flange, made the unit fit too

tight inside the casing.

This seems to have warped the housing that the fan

axle spins in, and this was why the fan did not seem

to want to run on low speeds. We discovered this

the other day when the unit started making a funny noise

and then started blowing harder on low speed.

Upon checking, the fan was now spinning freely in its

housing, as we suspected that it should have been.

So, whatever the axle was rubbing against, has either

rubbed through, or broken. Now, it is just making

an annoying grating racket.

However, there is no smell of burning plastic or metal,

and there seems to be on heat build up around the axle.

As there are no (good) techs available over the phone this

weekend (just one who suggested it might " blow up ! " ),

we are just running the darn thing to see if it will quit

(and besides we are roasting).

Plan to call a (good) tech next week to see what to

expect, or do. (Btw, I have pulled the unit part way

out several times, so that the stress on the housing

would be relieved, but it did no good. Maybe I could

whack the housing back into place with a hammer if it

was all the way out. But I have to get people out here

to take it out for me for that,

so that's a hassle. And at this

point, I think a lot of the damage has already been done.)

I did find out from a tech that, the cooling duct work

could be removed so that there would be free access to the

cooling fan. This is a VERY good thing. And next year,

if the unit is still running by then, I plan to remove

all the hard work I have done, and take the cooling ducts

off for cleaning.

Following that, I will use open cell foam and duct tape,

in an attempt to create a better interior seal, rather than

the elaborate scheme I used this time. :(

Best,

Todd
