Guest guest
Dana, the two fans are tricky because you need to make sure the in fan is big and reliable and the out fan is enough smaller so that whenever the wind blows backwards that the wind plus it does not mean sucking air out of the walls into your apt. And you need to seal ALL cracks in the walls or other holes (hardwood floors, etc.) where air leaks through. GET RID OF ALL CARPETS.. We found that this was almost impossible. Things would work for a few days here and there but then one gusty day would make me ill for a long time. We tried putting plastic sheets over our (turned off) heater and the cracked walls and then the stack effect blew that plastic WAY out when the fans were not just right. This pressurizing is almost impossible to get right, but at the time it was the only thing that we could do.. They kept stringing us along but eventually we realized that they would not ever fix it right.
Guest guest
Where is the mold coming from? If the building is owned by a family member, can't you PREVAIL UPON THEM to let you SAFELY and using containment and wearing PPE - start opening up wall cavities and looking for the source of that mold, probably some leak somewhere, perhaps now repaired, but still dangerous.. I don't know, but you get the idea. Guest guest
The fan prevents it from building up inside. And coming out of the walls. Because that is what happens if you don't have constant air circulation. You have to plug up all visible holes first, looking for them with a very careful eye. This is only to be done when the landlord wont fix it. And you can't move right away. Its important to not ever turn it off. It has to be on 24/7 or you will find that when its not on the mold re-emerges because the wind blows out if any holes.. (its impossible to plug them all) Obviously, this is cold in winter and hot in summer.. its a terrible way to have to live.. But at least you have fresh air.. Guest guest
Also, its important to do it like this.. One fan blowing in on upwind side (usually the west side in northern latitudes) one much smaller fan blowing out on downwind side. The upwind side needs to be outside, the downwind side can be in an airshaft (don't blow air in from airshaft, as it may be moldy air from basement/attic) The blowing in fan should be on 24/7 - never turn it off... The idea is to have the apartment 'pressurized' all the time TO KEEP MOLDY AIR IN THE BUILDING WALLS AWAY FROM YOUR LIVING SPACE DESPITE STACK EFFECT THAT BLOWS IT UP INSIDE OF THE WALLS. Do not ever, under any circumstances, allow the smaller 'out' fan to run when the 'in' fan is not running.
Guest guest
Just curious, why don't you ask them what tests, specifically, you could use to show this poisoning. And also ask if such tests exist for adults like you and where/how you or your daughter can take them. (i.e. LabCorp, Quest, ??? what code number) Do this in writing and follow it up with a registered letter when they don't answer.
