Guest guest
Latex sensitization (latex allergy) is caused by prolonged exposure to latex, just as other immune hypersensitizations (like mold) are. The body just says " enough, no more " , basically. The rate of latex allergy is increasing. Its currently around 1% in the general population and around 8-12% in healthcare workers. Here is a good article about latex allergy Latex Allergy in the Workplace http://toxsci.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/58/1/5 From the above paper... (NRL = natural rubber latex) " Individuals develop sensitivity to NRL by multiple routes including inhalation and compromised skin. Repeated physical contact with latex enhances the potential for developing a response. This is especially problematic for health-care workers who may wear dozens of gloves daily. Once the immune system is sensitized there may be no safe level of latex exposure and workers are at risk for severe allergic reactions. The only treatment is avoidance. " As they say, exposure can result in anaphylactic shock and dermatitis as well as other many other issues. . To me, that implies that latex contains something dangerous that your immune system doesn't like. What is latex? Latex rubber is the traditional, tapped from rubber trees (*Hevea brasiliensis) *rubber. Its more expensive than synthetic rubber. Until around WWII (I think) latex rubber was the only rubber there was. On 6/5/07, barb1283 <barb1283@...> wrote: > > I love an all latex mattress. Guest guest
Okay, I've done some investigation on Natural Latex. Yes Barb is correct about people being sensitive to the protein in the latex. However, the natural latex these beds are made out of doesn't contain the protein. They do series of washes that wash out the protein. There is no odor either. They say it is done to be over 99% protein free. After doing a series of studies w/people who were latex sensitive none of them had any problems w/the natural latex. Just thought I'd share this information. I am going to have to get some new mattresses and am leaning toward these organic beds. Going to do some more investigation. I also found a company who makes them w/the springs, but they also have the natural latex. But, then again I found out that the normal beds all have regular latex. So, guess I'd rather get the organic since they are about the same price.
