Guest guest
I have been at the hospital twice in the past week for my toe-infection. The infection has now lasted for about two years. The doctor asked me when I was diagnosed with diabetes and I told him in jan.99. He then answered: you have had diabetes for several years. I then told him that my bg had been stable and most of the time inside the recommended range of 3mmol - 10 mmol (54 respectively 180 with the US measure). I am overweight but I thought that if I just controlled my bg, there would be no serious complications. I then told him that my doctor had told me that when the bg gets out of range (to high) it is like putting fuel into a wound and infection will grow etc. I was very surprised when he told me that diabetics has some kind of problems with their bloodvessels. - I know that some have problems with the circulation to the legs. But I suddenly got infections 5 places on my hands as well - besides the toe-infection. So, well, though my bg is well controlled, I just can't continuing to eat as I did before I was diagnosed, because there are two reasons for infected wound at diabetics: bg out of range - and the problem with the blood circulation. They both, individually, contribute to the problem. I didn't quit understand that before and thought that someone out there don't know it as well. - So we have to get rid of that overweight! The doctor would not operate, because he said that if he did, I would be in risk of loosing my toe - and if that didn't heal etc. It's pretty scaring. I just can't understand why all the books here only contains summaries of the facts. The level of education is much to low. A newly diagnosed diabetic with overweight should be educated in this as soon as he or her was diagnosed. Well, I just wanted to share. Thought that someone on the list could use it. norgaard@... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Eng-Danish translation: http://www.angelfire.com/biz3/norgaard/index.html - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
