I am not sure if I understood your question well.

There are molds that live in water, say in the oceans,

seas, ponds, etc. However, these are not the molds

that cause damage in buildings. Molds found on dryland

such as those found in buildings have different water

requirements for growth. Those that require high

levels of water are the types that will be dominating

in flooded or leaking buldings. Some molds, for

example some species of Aspergillus and Penicillium

require very little moisture to grow and hence are

very common even in buildings with no moisture damage.
