Thieves warned about mouldy haul

POLICE are warning thieves who broke into an empty house that they

may have been contaminated with a toxic mould.

The offenders gained entry to the property in Reading Road,

Chineham, between Monday, July 9, and Thursday, July 19, through a

kitchen window.

Once inside they took £25,000 of designer clothes, a Honda generator

and a hydraulic breaker.

However, the property - which is a 17 th century listed building -

is contaminated with a toxic mould called Aspergillus.

The owner moved out last year after contracting Aspergillosis from

living in the contaminated home and police believe the clothing

stolen from the address may be contaminated.

NHS Direct and the Environmental Health Agency confirmed that

Aspergillus can present a risk to people with severe immunity

issues, such as leukaemia and cancer patients receiving

chemotherapy, however generally most people are not at risk.

Detective Sergeant Lee McClellan said: " I would like to appeal to

the offenders, who may still be in possession of the stolen goods

and warn them that these items could be contaminated. These clothes

could therefore pose a risk to people with severe immunity issues.

" The likelihood is that the people responsible for the burglary are

not at risk but if they become aware of unusual symptoms then they

should either see their GP or consult NHS direct. "
