Guest guest
Group, We are all frustrated with the lack of " proof " of what WE know is caused by mold. At the same time many of us are realizing that sometimes it isn't so simple. It may not be the mold itself (spores) but mold growth and the byproducts it produces. Or, mold is the most visible " evidence " of the " stew " of stuff caused by building dampness (Dr. Shoemaker, among many others). Even, it was chemicals from building materials, pesticides, or perhaps foods that are responsible for our disabling conditions. Finally, there may be combinations of events that lead to our experience. How to figure it all out? I thought of this as I came across an article in Science News about the attempts to identify the cause (epidemiology) of bee hive collapse. As some of you know there are many theories about what is happening. The article lists " mites, bad bee food, cell phones, bee AIDS, pesticides, genetically modified (GM) crops, overwork " as possibilities being investigated. Sound familiar? Here's something even more familiar and equally nonsensical: The " bees had worn themselves out making crop circles, thus explaining two mysteries at once. " It was made in jest, which is funny to us about bees, but when similar comments are made about us it isn't funny at all. Here's the conclusion to the article, " It now looks ... as if more than one factor may be coming together. " Now, if epidemiology would just apply similar resources and creativity to humans as they are to bees, maybe solutions to our complex needs could be advanced.
