Grandmother pushing to raise awareness for special needsSAN ANTONIO -

Cristian ez is seven years old, autistic, and prefers to be called " Cowboy. " Much to his grandmother's frustration, he's also been the subject of a police report.

Columba keeps a copy of the report, filed by the Northeast Independent School District Police Department close by, to remind her why she continues to push the district to better educate teachers to deal with special needs students.

" If one person knows how to work with them, they don't have to call the police, " said . " Our children aren't criminals. "

After the incident, transferred her son to Coker Elementary School, and said the problems stopped. Since the incident, she has written letters to the superintendent and school board, asking for teachers to be better trained in special education.

" Every time you turn around, there's another child, and we have so many issues with the district that they need to listen to us, " said .

has reached out to other parents with special needs children, and plans to rally outside the next NEISD board meeting to raise awareness.
