The mold invaded the basement, which took on several feet of water after the Lackawanna River overflowed during the June 2006 floods. Alicon, the company that won the bid to clean out the mold in July for $4,836, will begin the process in the middle of next week. Mayor said dry wall and Sheetrock will be cut out. The Sheetrock will not be replaced because the area is only used for storage, he said. " There's never any activity down there, " Mr. said. The city does not use the basement for personnel. City Hall houses police headquarters, the code enforcement office, council chambers, finance office, mayor's office, economic development office, clerk's office, a historical society museum and WCDL 1440-AM radio station. Police Sgt. Joe Laguzzi, Carbondale police union steward, said the mold has been a health concern for the police. A few officers have had allergy-like symptoms, like dry eyes and coughing, but is not sure whether the mold is the cause. At times, especially in the summer, the musty odor of the mold wafts into the back of the station near Chief Jeff 's office. " It's been bothering us, " Mr. Laguzzi said. " We're just glad to get it out of the building. " Contact the writer: ahollenbeck@...
