I have severe pain in the area of my liver. When I have blood tests,

sometimes my liver enzymes are elevated. I was exposed to toxic mold a

few years ago and have had pain in this area since shortly after being

exposed. Are there other tests that my doctor needs to do to determine

what is going on? I am on Darvocet for the pain, but I don't want to

stay on it because it can be addictive. Please help.

I'm only going to take mine when I cant tolerate the pain anymore or

find some other way to ease pain as I'm worried about that too. but my

liver pain has mellowed out now and only hurts if I get exposed to

something and the heavier the exposure, the more it hurts. it did hurt

almost constantly for a few years after I got out of moldy homes and

really didn't seem to get much better until I got in this tiny

apartment with a new ac system. the only thing I know to keep my liver

from hurting is advoidance as much as possible to chemicals and toxins.

I dont know if theres really any tests for the liver.

Thanks for your comments. I am only taking Darvocet when I can't take the pain

anymore. Otherwise, I try to make do with over-the-counter meds. Another

person suggested that I try milk thistle. I have tried several detox meds, but

I haven't tried milk thistle.

you might want to try raw garlic, some interesting links under

" raw garlic for liver detox " search

if you have no problems eating raw garlic, I'd be very interested to

know if a half of a clove a day would help your liver. and I've been

doing like KC and holding a piece under my tounge for a bit. than I

just stick the rest in with a food and chew it. reason I bring it up is

because I was haveing some constapation problems and I think this is

helping so might help the liver. it's well known as a detoxer. might be

worth a try.

HI--, I'm , & I was exposed to a VERY mold-ridden building yrs

ago...which caused horrific symptoms in me......including some terrible pain

across my back now, at the kidney/liver level. I take milk thistle religiously,

when the pain starts. Its the ONLY thing that has kept me out of the ER, with

that pain. Can't prescribe for you, of course....but I can say it definitely

works for me. I took about 4,000 mg yesterday.

Take GOOD care, all, & God bless,

Thanks, . Another member also suggested milk thistle. I'm going to

give it a try. I have tried everything else, and the Darvocet makes me really

sick so I'm not going to take it any more.

Watch out! Some of those painkillers contain very high amounts of NSAIDS

that can - damage your liver...

Also, never combine those NSAIDS. I heard recently about some healthy

teenage girl who died because she was slathering some OTC muscle pain cream

on her legs after workouts, it turned out to have some NSAID (tylenol,

advil, motrin, ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxyn, etc. there are many of them)

which, in combination with some other OTC pill she was taking - killed

her...

My wife has been taking it for years and there are only a very few

that can't take it, because they are allergic to it. (if you are

allergic to golden rod, there is a good chance you will react to MT

since they are in the same family.)

Take it first thing in the morning before you put anything else in

your stomach. Take it with tomato juice or V8, do not take it with

any other juices. If you do not have that on hand or like it, the

easiest thing to do is to take it with a tepid glass of water. My

wife normally takes two, but three wouldn't hurt. The main reason

she take the milk thistle is severe kidney pain in the lower back,

left and right of the spine just above the hips. This doesn't only

help to detox your kidneys, but also your liver, at the same helping

to keep your liver enzymes in the normal range. I know this for a

fact because of a cancer patient that went through chemo was taking

milk thistle and didn't tell her doctors. When they checked her

liver they were shocked (her liver enzyme level was normal), then

she told them what she had been taking and they called it " snake

oil. " But they had no other logical answer for this.

I have been told and read some information, you can't OD on them,

nor do they interact with any other medication. Normally within the

hour the kidney pains are gone. What's causing the pain, who

knows, but it is at least keeping it at bay and her out of pain.

This is what worked for us, I am not a doctor and just like any

other medication use caution.

On rxlist.com they tell you that the ingredients of darvocet are:

Propoxyphene Napsylate and *Acetaminophen*

Then a search on pubmed for Acetaminophen toxicity returns 2127 hits..

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?term=Acetaminophen%20toxicity & sourceid=\

mozilla-search & db=PubMed & orig_db=PubMed & dispmax=20 & dopt=DocSum

(Acetaminophen hepatotoxicity returns 1118 hits...)

Watch out with that stuff!

That medication you are taking has Acetaminophen in it.

That drug is the same ingredient that is in many OTC pain relievers and its

not good for your liver.

Tell your doctor that its giving you these problems so he can switch you to

something else.

I appreciate everyone's advice. I am going to try the milk thistle this weekend

when I get a chance to get out and buy some. My body reacted very severely to

the Darvocet, so I knew right away that I had to stop taking it. I have heard

about the toxicity of some of the over-the-counter pain pills, so I am careful

with those too. I really hope the milk thistle works. The pain is very severe.

Thanks again for all the good advice.

if Milk Thistle doesn't help, consider Chinese Bitters (which is a

liquid, and much better in terms of absorption vs a capsule which has

to digest b4 it does its job) AND doing a Liver Flush/Cleanse. go to

sensiblehealth.com for more details.

Thanks for the info. Milk Thistle is helping a little, so I am going to try it

for a few weeks and see how it goes. I don't want to try too many things at

once because my liver reacts so severely to most things.

I have had liver problems but no biopsy. One of my doctors talked about doing a

biopsy but decided not to. I almost wish he had done a biospy so I would know

how much damage has been done. At some point, I will probably look for a

different doctor and discuss that again. I am just tired of all the tests.

I did and I don't know that I would do it again. Not

conclusive and very painful.

Hey Everyone,

My wife is experiencing some of the same difficulties concerning the

liver. Just so you are aware many people with this condition have

been diagonsed with a blood disease or disorder and some have had a

diagnosis of leukemia, later to find out it's not leukemia it's a

fungal infection of the liver.

Just food for thought,

Thanks, KC. That's probably why the CS was helping me. I'll let you

know what results (if any) come back from the silver tests. My other

heavy metal tests were fine.

She is drinking plenty of fluids and taking Milk thistle. Funds at

this time will not allow us to expand on any other treatment.
