Guest guest
I have a cat that strayed to my house that has a number of health problems and is very overweight. I don't think she is overeating so wondering if it is due to illness. Taking her to vet this coming week and wondering if she could be holding fat due to toxins in her body. Does anyone know what agents might detox a cat? I think there is a group for mold affected pets but I have lost the link to it. Does anyone know name of group? Guest guest
CSM and milk thistle. Need to follow CSM with food, brings up interesting question for other absorbers of toxins such as charcoal. I wonder if one should follow charcoal a half hour later with food, and also milk thistle. I don't know if milk thistle is a toxin 'absorber' though. I have never seen directions on taking milk thistle saying to follow with food, so I assume noone is doing this? Guest guest
What other symptoms does the cat have besides overweight? What are you feeding the cat? Kibble contains at least 50 percent carbohydrates (they can't process it otherwise) and cats have no need for carbs and can't metabolize them well, so carbs cause many imbalances and diseases in cat, overweight being one of them. A diet based on high quality meats, such as the better canned foods or a natural, raw diet, can help if this is the problem. The cat could be hypothyroid, although hyperthyroid is more common in cats. You could have a *full* thyroid panel done, and the best lab is Dr. Dodds' lab. She is an expert on thyroid in animals. I think you would have to be very careful detoxing a cat. They have metabolisms and livers very different from other mammals, and are sensitive to things that the rest of us can handle. Join WholeCatHealth at and ask there; the list moderator knows a tremendous amount and is good at research. Guest guest
I would ask your vet about this because there are a lot of different diseases a cat can have and any serious dietary change could have effects on it that might be unwanted. If you do give this cat anything to specifically detox it ask the vet first. If you do do a search on PubMed, the word to use to bring up cat-specific information is 'feline' Better safe than sorry! Guest guest
I just found out I had an elevated liver function test and I am currently going through detox and the day I had the test was the day I finished my prescription for an anti-fungal medication. Any comments? Is my liver destroyed for life? I also have fatty liver and found this out last April. Guest guest
I have liver damage too because of the toxic mold exposure. I took an antifungal for several months but it didn't change anything with my liver tests or the pain. Guest guest
According to my PA, the parts of the liver that are damaged won't regenerate. He claims that you can only stop the progression of the disease. I hope someone tells me otherwise. I recently had a healthy looking Amazon parrot die here. Upon necropsy, the vet found a liver that didn't have one living cell in it. It was totally destroyed. I would have had histology done on the tissue, but was told that you can't determine what caused it once it's in formalin. Only a living liver biopsy might tell the story. I don't know how much damage I have, but I believe it's quite a bit. I was told that there was fibrosis throughout. Guest guest
What are the specific liver enzyme tests you are talking about and what are the numbers that you have had? I have had pains in that area and have had a fair amount of bloodwork done. I'd like to look at my own numbers and compare them. Also, does anybody know of any web sites that describe all the different medical (bloodwork, etc.) tests and what the typical ranges are and what they mean? Are there any other resources where this gets discussed with specific information about what they mean?
Guest guest
Parrots can be very intelligent. They are incredible. I bet you miss him or her tremendously. Did you hear about , the 'talking' Amazon grey parrot that died recently? He even got (two) obituaries in the New York Times. I am sure that was a first for a parrot. His last words were " You be good, see you tomorrow. I love you. " http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/11/science/11parrot.html How can you tell if your liver is damaged? Can you see anything different in imaging? CT scan? Ultrasound? ?? > According to my PA, the parts of the liver that are damaged won't > regenerate. Guest guest
You might want to talk to someone at a natural supplement store like Great Earth Vitamins or a homeopathic doctor. There are many herbs and supplements that have medicinal powers and they aren't toxic like most of the prescription medications. Guest guest
Someone mentioned taking supplements for a fatty liver. Can that person tell me what they are taking and if it's working? Guest guest
a pharmacist I met said exactly that--that I was fortunate to have not been prescribed antifungal meds. has anyone tried doing liver cleanses/flushes? i've been doing them for years now, and now on *maintenance* of 2-3 times/year. during the peak of my illness, i was doing 'em every few weeks. > > Yes, most of the antifungal drugs are bad for the liver. > > Barth > > --- > > GAC> I also have high liver counts.
