Let me start off by informing everyone to start saving up your pennies so you

can attend the 71st APCO international conference in 2005 in the Mile Hi

City, DENVER Colorado!!!!!!!

(the in-between locations are, in order: Salt Lake City, Nashville,

Indianapolis and Montreal)

The Console gathering at the opening gathering was fun, fun, fun. Many thanks

to Ort of APCO for the cool freebies - APCO mouse pads, bumper

stickers, cool badges we could write our email names on for easier

recognition. Lancaster, PA is hosting a regional conference and they had a

goody bag out for folks. I contributed some sun visors from my fire

department. A few folks even got a small jar of Colorado Peach Jam that my

sister and I made on Friday before we left on Saturday!!!!

It was great to meet for the first time these following Console members:

Peggy T & Bob B from Beverly MA, Kathy #2 from Atlanta, Laurie from

PA, Ort from APCO, Hershel from VA and Tammy from CA. It was fun to

see those I'd previously met - O, Toni W from GA, B, W,

Dave L (and his wife) and Randall L from CA and Bob S from Kansas. I know

others from the list were there but I never found them to say hello -- Gil,

Barry, Dave Clemons - (who missed out on a jar of jam!!!).

Others have been telling you about the fun at the special events, and all the

freebies (and no Carl S, I didn't get enough bouncing flashing balls for

everyone!!!!) but I thought I'd share with you some of the neat things I

learned in the sessions:

here is a web site to get a map from lat/long coordinates: www.topozone.com

Washington State has created a brochure to educate people in their wilderness

about the usage of cell phones out in the woods:

www.wa.gov/wseme911publications/5.e911/911-bkcntry.brochure.

Now, if I got that wrong, go to www.wa.gov and hunt!!!!

Any American with Disabilities Act questions, call 1- to contact

your regional center for assistance in training or obtaining information. One

of ADA's newest guides available is called " Guide for small towns " .

A bit of trivia for those who like numbers... The Worcester Fire department

averages 25,000 push-to-talk transmissions in an average day. During the 9

days it took them to recover all 6 of their fallen firefighters last year

following a fire, they averaged 60,000!!!!

That's all of the notes I've unpacked so far.

Back to the tourist stuff - the conference offered several tour packages. I

took the one that went to Lexinberg & Concord & learned lots about the

history of our country. Another tour was called Salem Witch tour and for

some unknown reason to me, those tour busses got police escorts - lights and

sirens!!!

Peggy mentioned the State Trooper who sang the Star Spangled Banner - I saw

him on TV at a local funeral for an officer who died where he sang Danny Boy.

Sis and I returned home safe and sound. We had no problems at the airport

except for the rude bus driver who laid on his horn as our shuttle driver was

getting our bags out of the van -- I've never heard people honk this much

since the last time I was in Vegas.

We found out that yesterday (Thursday) a Denver firefighter died in the line

of duty - he drown after being sucked into a drain culvert after rescuing a

woman who fell into it during a flash flood in northern Denver. He was found

later in the evening. I don't have an e-mail address for the Denver Fire

Department but I'm sure they have one.

Thanks to all who had a hand in the conference this year. It was fun.

In a very similar incident, an Indianapolis firefighter also died last Sunday

during a simulated rescue training exercise, retrieving a child mannequin

from a river bottom. Not sure what went wrong, he was well trained,

according to the accounts, and a good swimmer. Very sad.

Also pleased with this year's APCO show and delighted to have met so many of

you and able to place faces and smiles with names and emails. Thanks to

those who made the Console gathering on Sunday a good one.

<< What Kathy forgot to mention is that her peach jam is FANTASTIC and she

should consider selling it as a fund raiser for her chapter.

Thanks Clines!
