The tests you want for gluten intolerance (or celiac) are:

Antigliadin IgG

Antigliadin IgA

Antiendomysial antibody (EMA)

Tissue transglutaminase (tTg) antibody

Total serum IgA level

Total IgA is extremely important because many have low levels, in which case the

IgA value is not accurate.

Also, the celiac gene test can be extremely helpful as it can be indicative of

the gluten intolerance really being celiac (celiac is just a subset of gluten

intolerance whereby the gut is impacted). A positive IgG test with normal value

for EMA and tTG is indicative of gluten intolerance versus celiac, although if

you have the celiac genes, it's likely that the disease just hasn't progressed

to the point that there is significant gut damage.

If his IgG is near the upper range or even slightly over, he likely would

benefit from a GF diet. An intolerance to gluten can contribute to depression

as the gluten impacts the brain (lots of recent research in this area including

before and after SPECT scans). A reaction to gluten can also trigger autoimmune

diseases.

Here's an excellent research article that explains the brain impact quite

nicely:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15774013

Note, that while the subjects of the test were adolescents, it obviously can

also apply to adults. Notice that they found that the subjects had low levels of

important amino acids and thus had serotonergnic dysfunction (due to low levels

of tryptophan).

knowledge here! His diet has to be changed also to lower carbs and higher

protein. Which IG test shows gluten intolerance? All of his were tested, but one

was slightly off by .5 of a point or something like that. BTW, someone asked

about supplementig the seratonin, but the tests showed he has no seratonin to

supplement, so he has to take that seratonin first to get any results on his

depression, etc. Whew, that alot, thanks again everybody and whatever info you

give me helps alot!

If he is getting a compounded hydrocortisone, it is most likely made from wild yam or other plants and should not cause a problem.

The standard drugstore Cortef or generic hydrocortisone is the problem.

I also did not know about the availability of seratonin. Which compounder is providing it?
