Guest guest
- I eat chicken - baked with a little sauce of some sort (check the sugar contents!) I also eat it fried at times, my favorite being " chicken strips " . I also love steak, which a great thing to order when you are dining out - I ask to leave off the baked potatoe or fries and have them give me an extra helping of salad or steamed veggies which restaurants are always glad to do. To most every meal I add salad with a dressing I LIKE - but I do chose from ones that have the lowest sugar content, but since I don't like the " fat free " ones I don't do them! Steamed veggies - try a little salsa over them - that is spicy! I tend to eat a chicken fajita pita from Jack-in-the-Box most every day on the way to work - they really are good and fairly low carb and fat. Snacks are beef and turkey jerky and veggies like broccoli and cauliflower that I buy from Costco already cut up. I also like the pickled stuff - mushrooms, peppers, artichokes, you name it. I don't really like to cook so I keep things pretty simple. Costco also has a great big bag of spinich leaves that I do for salad and sometimes add some shrimp. I also snack on almonds and cashews - almonds tend to be lower carb than any other nuts. If my family wants burgers - well I eat the burger and not the bun - just put your mustard and onions on it and cut it up with a fork - it really is good once you get over feeling " deprived " of the bun! You can even do that in fast food restaurants. When they eat pizza I really don't want the just one piece that I can handle so I just get myself a steak or chicken strips and then feel full, but I will admit to picking at the toppings much to the dismay of the person who comes to take the next piece!!! Cheese, eggs sometimes, basically any meat I just cook with some seasonings, we love to BBQ, and eat with a salad and veggies. It really didn't take all that long to get used to doing this, especially once I noticed how much better I felt. I also have Chronic Hep C so between that and the diabetes I was really sick most of the time. But that last year has been amazing - I have returned to work and am doing things that I have not done for years!!!!! The most important thing is too test your blood sugar after eating a certain food and see if it stays in the good range. Meenie has mentioned that she can eat carrots by the ton and have no negative effect but just a handful will shoot my BG skyward - so we really are all different. I have heard others on this list say they can handle bread or pasta in small quantities but that doesn't work well for me either - unless I know I am going on a shopping marathon soon after!!!!! Breakfast seems to be the hardest meal of the day for me - I don't really make the time to cook eggs or anything before work so I usually end up nibbling on left over chicken or steak etc. Maybe Meenie or one of the other " low carbers " out there have some good suggestions! When cooking for the " fam " I will add french bread or rolls to the meal and they are happy then too - it was hard at first to overlook that bread cause that was one (ha - one - I had many) of my food weaknesses but like I said, now it is easier cause I know if I eat bad I will feel bad and I am sooooooo enjoying feeling better!!!! Hope this helps and feel free to ask more - sorry this is so long winded but there is so much to share huh? - Rebekah
Guest guest
Meenie - Yeehaw - those recipes sound great - especially the sausage frittata and the omlete muffins - I I will definately have to try those for breakfast! I printed off your e-mail so next time at the grocery store I will remember what to buy. Isn't it wonderful to be able to eat stuff like this and still keep the BG in control and even actually LOSE weight!!!! Rebekah
Guest guest
The Pentagon meeting sounds great - hopefully people will listen to Dr. Atkins and not " pre-judge " by what the crazy media tries to stir up. By the by did you check out that low-carb link that someone posted a couple of days ago - it cited a report by Harvard that says they have found a 26% less likely occurance of heart problems by women who ate more protein and less carb! Apparently did a 14 year study with 80,000 women - I like that! Also have you ever tried the protein bars from Atkins - I was thinking of ordering some and wondered if anyone had found them tasty! Guest guest
Interesting, eh?: Dr. Atkins To Address USAF Leaders In Washington Accustomed to dealing with even weightier matters than weight control, Air Force leaders will be mustering in the auditorium of the Pentagon on Friday to hear Dr. Atkins speak-by invitation-on the topic. The response to the notice of his 8:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m. talk has reportedly been enthusiastic.
Guest guest
Yes indeed, it is great. It drives me crazy when I read things in the paper or magazines saying this is a " NO carb, High cholesterol diet that will kill you " . They obviously don't know anything about it and haven't read the book. I'm on an Atkins support list and there are people on there who have lost over 100 lbs and who have the lab reports from their doctors office showing their cholesterol has improved tremendously. My gosh, Dr Atkins is a cardiologist and he created this diet for his heart patients to help them! I missed the report about the women but I'm not surprised! As to the Atkins bars... They aren't all that great I'm sorry to say. They just came out with some new reformulated ones that are better, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get one, hehe. Some people love them though, so I guess its one of those ymmv type things. They are meant to be a meal replacement, but some people break them into several pieces and just eat one small piece at a time as a " treat " . I'd as soon stick with my cheesecake . Guest guest
Rebeka, Thanks for the tips I will sure put them to good use. For breakfast I get the frozen pre cooked breakfast sausage which I heat in the microwave for 2 minuets and eat that, most of the time I don't have time to cook eggs either, and for lunch I eat salad and veggies like green beans or such and same for supper. Good luck to you. Jean
