I totally disagree with you about the open lung biopsy.

I have to agree with Leanne. went in to the ER on an early Sunday moning with a pain in my upper chest wall. Was admitted and given morphine. Scheduled biopsy for Wed., and to inflate one of the lungs that was defalted.they then moved it up to Tuesday. In my simple, uneducated thought, I believed they were just going to asperate some cells. While in the holding area before entering the surgical room, the surgeon told my husband am that after the surgery, to not be suprised if I was on a ventilater...we shook our heads yes. He came back again because he wanted us to be sure we understood...that the lung might not stay up and that I may be on a ventilater. We understood. Not one time was open~lung biopsy mentioned. Well when I woke up in recovery, I was NOT on a ventilater. But my left side was all bandaged uo with a tube coming out of it...and it HURT! They placed me in ICU for 24 hrs, the pickline came out and there was blood everywhere and I moved too quick, irritating the surgical wound. I was in terrible pain, was in the hospital for 15 days. There is so much scar tissue on my left side where the incision was that I can't lay on that side. I had been through a pyalytle cyst removal, an appendectomy that went bad, a gall bladder removal, and three lipotrypsys, four hospital births and two home deliveries, but nothing as bad as the lung biopsy. I hurt so bad. After that they decided to administer the PFT and a CT scan. To me, it was a horrific surgery I had ever experienced.

My husband's open biopsy was a nightmare too. He was in the hospital for a

total of 18 days! He developed pneumonia after coming out of ICU and that

was the main reason for the extended stay. If we had it to do over, we

would NEVER have the open biopsy! He has never regained what he lost during

that time and not even close to breathing as well. That's been a little

over a year ago. We have gone from 2 L of Oxygen to 6 currently. The

insult to injury was that the biopsy didn't tell them anything more than

" yes " he definitely has IPF which we had already been told. Not worth it in

our opinion! Judy
