Guest guest
Is Clarins Angel Perfume by Thierry Mugler, now more toxic than before? Las Vegas, NV 89126 August 27 2007 http://www.expertclick.com/NewsReleaseWire/default.cfm? Action=ReleaseDetail & ID=17710 & f5=1 Clarins promotes itself as being a natural and botanically based international corporate entity, that intentionally only identifies certain botanicals in their ads and website. Even though their Angel Eau du Parfum (Angel) line carries major health ramifications. In November of 2004, Angel was deformulated and at that time the only ingredients identified were Diethyl Phthalate, d-Limonene, Patchouli Alcohol, Methyl Dihydrojasmonate, Galaxolide, Isopropyl Myristate, Alpha-Pinene, 3-Carene, Methanolazulene, Alpha Guarene, Azulene, Benzophenone, Cedrol Methyl Ether, Ethanol/Ethyl Alcohol. The laboratory, which provided the deformulation, was Applied Consumer Services in Hialeah Gardens, Florida. According to their website their services included " complete chemical analysis to deformulate (reverse engineer) any type of consumer product, such as cosmetics… " The packaging for Angel at that time only referenced as their ingredients: Alcohol Denatured, Fragrance (Parfum), Purified Water (Aqua), Benzophenone-2, D & C Violet No. 2 (CI 60725), FD & C Blue No. 1 (CI 42090). As obtained thru court documents, Clarins hid from the public their own laboratory's confirmation that this version of the Angel formula was known to cause ocular cell necrosis. The generic listing of Fragrance (Parfum) on a package has the potential for severe health risks that most likely will have a synergistic effect with the disclosed components, according to Angel De Fazio, President of the National Toxic Encephalopathy Foundation (NTEF). According to the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) website, the currently listed ingredients in Angel, which were confirmed on August 26, 2007, by a sales associate at the Nordstroms Store in Las Vegas, Nevada, disclosed: Alcohol Denat., Fragrance (Parfum), Water (Aqua), Benzophenone-2, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Coumarin, Limonene, Linalool, Amyl Cinnamal, Geraniol, Citronellol, Benzyl Salicylate, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citral, Eugenol, Isoeugenol, Violet 2 (CI 60725), Blue 1 (CI 42090). These are only the disclosed chemical ingredients in Angel's formula. What undisclosed chemicals are incorporated under Clarins generic reference of " fragrance " ? According to the sales associate " this formula has not changed, as I am very familiar with the product " . This is a concerted deceptive sales practice by Clarins, the sales associate and Nordstroms, as the aforementioned ingredients have changed substantially. Based on the prior deformulation and the current listed ingredients, only 5 of the prior ingredients were incorporated into the current Angel formula. In Contact Dermatitis 2007 Jul:57(1):-10, " Sensitization to 26 Fragrances to be labeled according to current European regulation. Results of the IVDK and review of the literature. " Schnuch A, Uter W, Geier J, Lessmann H, Frosch PJ., stated " To study the frequency of sensitization to 26 fragrances to be labeled according to current European regulation. " Out of the 26 ingredients studied, 9 of these are part of the chemical makeup of Angel (Benzyl Salicylate, Citral, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Isoeugenol, Limonene and Linalool). That is almost 1/3 of the fragrance mixture that has known skin sensitizers, according to De Fazio. Additionally, according to the EWG disclosure of Angel, the following classifications of the chemicals are cause for concern: Allergies/Immunotoxicity (82%): Amylcinnamaldehyde, Benzyl Salicylate, Coumarin, Limonene, Eugenol, Fragrance, Geraniol, Isoeugenol, Butyl Methylpropional, Citronellol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Benzophenone- 2, and Citral. Irritation (Skin, eyes or lungs) (65%): Citral, Limonene, Amylcinnamaldehyde, Citronellol, Eugenol, Geraniol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Isoeugenol, Linalool, Alcohol Denatured and Butyl Methylpropional. Cancer (59%): D & C Violet 2, Eugenol, FD & C Blue 1, Coumarin, Alcohol Denatured, Limonene, Benzophenone –2, Isoeugenol, Citral and Linalool. Developmental/Reproductive Toxicity (29%): Alcohol Denatured, Butyl Methylpropional, Citral, Coumarin and Isoeugenol. Organ System Toxicity (Non-reproductive) (82%): Eugenol, Coumarin, Geraniol, Alcohol Denatured, Benzophenone-2, Citral, Isoeugenol, FD & C Blue 1, Butyl Methylpropional, Benzyl Salicylate, Citronellol, Limonene, Hexyl Cinnamal and Linalool. Violations, Restrictions & Warnings (41%): D & C Violet 2, Citral, Limonene, Linalool, Butyl Methylpropional, Eugenol, and Isoeugenol. Neurotoxicity (71%): Fragrance, Eugenol, Butyl Methylpropional l, Citronellol, Coumarin, Geraniol, Isoeugenol, Linalool, Amylcinnamaldehyde, Citral, FD & C Blue 1 and Hexyl Cinnamal. Endocrine Disruptors (36%): Alcohol Denatured, Benzophenone- 2, Citral, Coumarin, Eugenol and Isoeugenol. Greater than 50% of the listed ingredients have health risks associated with them. Eugenol at very low levels, from animal studies show that it has respiratory effects, in products that may be aerosolized (airborne). In addition, there is evidence of brain and nervous system effects at low doses. Coumarin and Geraniol have shown to have broad systemic effects at low doses. Benzophenone-2, is a strong human skin toxicant. The known human skin toxicants that have strong evidence associated with them are (Amylcinnamaldehyde, Benzyl Salicylate, Coumarin, Limonene, Eugenol, Fragrance, Geraniol and Isoeugenol). In June of 1991, a highly quoted study " Identification of polar volatile organic compounds in consumer products and common micro environments " cites that Limonene is associated with skin irritation and sensitization; eye irritation and damage; dizziness; rapid and shallow breathing; tachycardia; bronchial irritation; unconsciousness and convulsions. Linalool is associated with respiratory disturbances, ataxic gait, reduced spontaneous motor activity and depression, CNS disorder and it is also a bee attractant. The toxicological properties of Ethyl Alcohol denatured at 95% have known acute effects upon humans. According to Scholar Chemistry's MSDS on Ethyl Alcohol " it is very dangerous in case of skin contact (irritant), the chronic effects have shown that this chemical is toxic to the nervous and reproductive systems " . Since the autonomic nervous system acts to increase the blood flow to the skin to cool the body, does Ethyl Alcohol permeate the skin to introduce this formula into the blood stream? If so, since Coumarin is also used as an anti-coagulant (blood thinner) by competing with Vitamin K (according to the Online Medical Dictionary), can this have an effect upon the vascular system? Coumarin is also associated with being an anti-fungal and rat poison (Molecular Expressions: Phytochemical Gallery). Clarins has manufactured additional Angel fragranced products, from Nordstroms website, they include shampoo, conditioner, hair mist, body lotion, body powder shaker, body crème, " showers " and hand cream. Nordstroms is a known exclusive distributor of Clarins fragrance products. With consumers applying such a myriad of skin and personal care products because they like the fragrance, the unanswered concern is: with repetitive application of Angel fragranced products will this allow for cumulative damage to the unsuspecting public? Has research been done on the absorption of these products when used in both the bath then après bath application? Since November of 2004 until November 2006, it is apparent that the formula for Angel has changed. Has Clarins retested this new formulation? Will Clarins again falsify the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) associated with this newer version? Are the dermal assault tests going to be skewed by prescreening the test subjects? Predicated on their past proven deception the answer is a resounding yes, said De Fazio. Mark Schapiro in his new book " Exposed: The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Products " he unmasks the truth regarding how companies have 2 versions of the same product. Since the European Union (EU) has complied a list of banned substances, apparently manufacturers are creating 2 versions of the same product, one that complies with the EU directives and the more toxic version for distribution in the United States. Which formulation of Angel is Clarins distributing to all its international retail outlets? With all the toxic imports from China recently, when is the United States Food and Drug Administration going to protect the public from these toxic imports? The estimate of over 40 million people suffering from fragrance related exposures, asthma on the rise both in adults and children, products such as this need to be independently tested, highly regulated and or banned. In conjunction with written notification of the known health hazards and risks associated with the finished product. ### Angel De Fazio, B.S.A.T. (Angel@...)
