This meeting is intended to educate primary care providers on routine developmental surveillance and screening for autistic spectrum and related neurodevelopmental disorders (ASD/NDs), thus increasing timely and accurate diagnosis of ASD/NDs.

Educational Objectives

-Identify the common behavioral manifestations of ASD/NDs at various developmental ages, including infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age and adolescents.

-Demonstrate proficiency in the use of at least one appropriate instrument recommended for routine developmental surveillance, and at least 1 appropriate instrument for screening of ASD/NDs.

-Distinguish the steps needed when a positive screen occurs.

-Identify how to successfully and appropriately serve children with ASD in the medical home.

Target Audience

The program will be of interest to primary care physicians, psychologists, residents, fellows, medical students, nurses, OT/PTs, LCSWs, language pathologists, educators, ECI and child care providers.

Method of Instruction and Evaluation

The method of instruction and evaluation for this conference includes lectures, slides, case presentations, panel discussions and question and answer sessions. A course evaluation will be provided to each participant at the close of the course to be completed and returned.

Accreditation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston designates this activity for a maximum of 12.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This activity provides 12.00 contact hours of nursing continuing education.

This program has been approved for 12 credit hours in accordance with the requirements of the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners. Provider Sponsor: Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority of County/Provider Number CS 5577.
