A MEXBOROUGH dad claims black mould which has spread through the

walls of his council flat has split his family and left him

suffering from depression.

Alan Tomney, of Highwoods Crescent, says he is " at the end of his

tether " after black damp spread through his second floor flat over a

period of 18 months.

Mr Tomney, 36 told the Times he was on anti-depressants after his

partner and 12-year-old son moved out of the flat for health reasons.

He said: " The damp has left black fungi all over the walls and

ceiling. All our clothes carpets furniture curtains and toys are

ruined. My lad is not allowed to stay here now things have got so

bad.

" We are both suffering from depression and anxiety and I think

breathing in spores is damaging my health. We reported all this to

St Leger Homes - we think it is rising damp and I just want to move

out of here, but they disagree. I have been told there was a flood

here some years ago which was never sorted out properly. "

Mr Tomney who is unemployed, is being supported in his claims by by

Mexborough Mind Mental Health Services, who have written to the

housing association on his behalf.

St Leger Homes' Director of Property Services, Hopkinson

said: " A survey of the problem has showed that condensation is

causing the mould. We will be installing an extractor fan to help

solve the problem this week. "
