Is the district Katy ISD? Just curious.

It is my understanding that once a need is identified, the district must provide someone who meets that need. There is a group you can contact for help:

http://txp2p.org/index.html

ask for the Houston office number and contact them....they will help guide you and give you support.

Praying that you will be victorious in fighting for your child!

If the child has a unique need and this need needs to be fulfilled in order to provide FAPE, then they must do it, so they need to provide someone who can sign who can teach him.  It is not  your child's fault that this is his only means of communication.  They can not give any excuses for not doing it.  Be sure to document EVERYTHING: time, dates, what was said, who said it.  It is best to tape all meetings, and in Texas it is legal to tape phone conversations so long as one of the parties (that would be you) knows it is being taped.

If they cannot provide it then they would have to pay to send him to a school that does provide instruction  using sign language.  No matter what they say, the law is on YOUR CHILD'S side on this issue.  All you have to do is prove your child needs a sign language instructor or interpreter in order to make progress.

I agree with this, do not back down. The law is on your side. If they refuse, just stand up and say that the meeting is over and that you will come back with an advocate or a lawyer. They must provide FAPE for your child.

There is a trick to what you are asking here. Public schools provide basic care

for our children but sign language is not something they have to be trained in

to get a job in the public school system. You can have an ard meeting and

request that they send your child to either a school of autism that povides sign

or another district. This is your right to do so. I asked someone I know in the

special programs. This applies all o er the state of Texas.
