SINAI'S 9/11 TASK http://www.nypost.com/seven/09212007/postopinion/letters/mt__sinais_9 _11_task.htm NEW YORK POST September 21, 2007 -- We at Mount Sinai's Irving J. Selikoff Center stand firmly by our research findings on 9/11 responders' respiratory illnesses ( " Toxic Pseudoscience . . . " Editorial, Sept. 10). The findings, published by " Environmental Health Perspectives, " revealed that 46.5 percent of 9/11 responders had lower respiratory symptoms, 62.5 percent had upper respiratory symptoms and 68 percent were affected overall. These results are confirmed by similar findings from the FDNY and the Department of Health's WTC Registry. It is our responsibility as physicians to disseminate information to the medical community and the public. This hard-won information guides diagnosis and treatment and saves lives. Mount Sinai launched our response to 9/11 just 48 hours after the attack. In those early days we were the only institution to offer care to responders, and we have now examined 21,000. Thousands of WTC rescue workers and responders have become ill and need medical care. It is our mission to provide the medical care that these brave heroes need and deserve.
