Residents living in the Beauclerc Bay Apartments said they are living in deplorable conditions, and some of the residents are taking their complaint to the state level. When Channel 4 cameras and a reporter arrived at the apartment complex to ask some questions about the living conditions they were confronted by Jack Keyser, who said he owns the property and got physical with the photographer. What Keyser might not have wanted the public to see was what residents said was mold, raw sewage, dangerous staircases and deplorable living conditions in and near their apartments. Resident Shull said her air conditioning unit and her vents are covered in mold, and so are the staircases outside her apartment. " I spray them with bleach but it keeps coming back. The A/C is covered in black mold, and you breathe that in, " said Shull. " I was going down the steps and fell because the steps were rotted. I wound up having to have major back surgery done. I have a cage on my spine. I was left with permanent nerve damage in my legs. I live in constant pain and on pain pills everyday. " She said she could barely walk because of a fall on the steps. Shull told Channel 4 she has asked management for help and that she has even filed a lawsuit, but still is getting no help. Resident Stohler also said she lives with inhumane conditions and constant mold. " It's in my son's room. That's where the A/C unit is in his closet. The carpet is soaked. It's all over, " Stohler said. MAP: Beauclerc Bay She said a foul odor near her home is what appears to be raw sewage leaking outside of her unit. " If something is wrong, they should be able to fix it, " Stohler said. Another Beauclerc Bay family, that asked that its identity not be revealed, said the ceiling of the shower was caved in because of mold. " Everybody that lives here has a right to be safe and not have to worry about getting hurt or getting sick, " Shull said. When Channel 4 reporter Pantelides went to ask management about the situation, Keyser tried to push the camera. After the confrontation ended, Keyser asked Pantelides inside and said he planned to renovate the apartment complex about a year ago but that legal troubles delayed the changes. The city has investigated the Beauclarc Bay Apartments in the past. Since 2003, the city's division of housing and neighborhoods said there have been 34 complaints against the apartment complex. There is currently one active complaint against the complex regarding a rotted gate surrounding the pool. --------------------------------- Take the Internet to Go: Go puts the Internet in your pocket: mail, news, photos & more.
