EWING -- Cleaning crews worked through Labor Day weekend to remove

mold from Antheil School classrooms in time for opening day

Wednesday.

School officials said the mold, discovered in the third- and fourth-

grade wing, has been removed and the classrooms have been cleared

for students to enter.

" By Sunday afternoon, we had a clean wing, " said Dennis Nettleton,

district business administrator. " We had a problem and we solved it

and we want parents and staff to feel confident that they are

returning to a safe environment. "

Mold can cause health problems for those with allergies, respiratory

problems or other health issues.

Teachers readying third- and fourth-grade classrooms last week

noticed a " musty " smell and saw evidence of mold on students'

chairs, Nettleton said.

Preliminary testing by environmental specialists revealed mold in

the dropped ceilings of two classrooms and further testing revealed

evidence of mold in other classrooms as well.

" We determined the whole wing was affected, " Nettleton said.

He said the mold was caused by a faulty ventilating system that was

bringing too much moist air into the classrooms of that wing
