Hi I'm new to the list. I am leaving a home that has mold & going to new home.

I need to buy new furniture but have severe MCS so with offgasing it is scary.

I am ripping up the floor & putting all tile in which is of concern. But first

of all I will need a table & chairs for the family to eat on.

I'm thinking metal & glass but I'm concerned about the finish on them. Also

the cushions. Maybe I could do wood if I used AFM on it? Anyone have any

experience with this huge problem of furnishing your house?

Sometimes new isn't all what its cracked up to be when you have MCS. Have you

thought about looking for good used furniture? That way the off gasing is done.

Before you go into the furniture store, I would pre look online. Think leather,

my Sis got a great set from costco and it didn't bother me. Its the crap they

put on materials that the worst.

Best of luck, itsounds like your being smart about it. Wearing masks helps to

if you really need to go in those stores

Take care

If you are going for " used " furniture...keep this in mind...if it was from

a 2nd hand store verify of they " sprayed " anything on it or if they use an

exterminator as the furniture will absorb and offgas those chemicals.

If from an individual, ask the same thing and also ask if they had any

pets...as the pets might have had an accident and they used something to

mitigate the odor. Did they ever have the upolstery cleaned or or did they

use any fragrances in the house things like that. NOthing is ever 100%

safe.....

I'm just concerned about the furniture being moldy if used. I guess I can look

around & I could try to clean,.

I think lawn/patio furniture is desireable from many angles even if

just for temporary furniture until you have the time to plan this out

if you live somewhere that they may still have it in the stores. I've

seen some very attractive things. If they have removable cushions

that can be washed, if large, at commercial laundry. I would be a

concerned about used furniture after the long search for an 'unmoldy

place' was discovered to be difficult to find, some places very much

so. Fresh smelling is good indication but I wouldn't trust just my

nose for something that important, to bring something from an unknown

place into a newly cleaned or remediated area. Previous to current

experience I thought most places okay, and a few moldy. Now I think

it is other way around. Few places healthy, and most moldier than

healthy.

Thank you, I was thinking the same about used furniture. I went in to a new

furniture store & got really ill. So maybe the patio furniture we have will be

sufficient for now until I can figure something out. Loni

I've had to throw away or sell for squat all my belongings 3 times-

now I have an apt that has no furniture-I live outside of it with

metal and glass. Be carefull-buy one thing at a time-live with it for

a few weeks-then buy something else. I am still recovering from a dog

bed i bought at Sam's club-have to have the car sterilized.

CHrome and glass as he mentioned are great. I have those in both my den

and dinette area....I got lucky and

foud a solid wood dining table.

They sell chrome and glass entertainment centers. I have 2 metal/glass

computer desks. The keyboard shelve is patticle board and I had it air

out for a bit and havent' had a problem. On the printer and tower ledge I

just put tin foil and it's fine.

THey sell metal bed frams and also matching nightstands with glass.

THe following can be made very easily but it's costly. Have a table made

with 2 v-shaped pieces of lass and place a 3/4 inch glass top on it. THe

v- " legs " can be drilled and hinges placed to make them secure.

This isn't about the furniture, but the flooring. From my experience,

be careful when they pull up the old flooring, you don't know what is

under the old floor/carpet & whatever is/could be under there, will get

released into the air. IMO(in my opinion), I would not be there while

that is being done or if you have to be, keep a good mask on. When we

had carpet ripped up, when we bought this house, I developed pneumonia

& actually ended up coding(Resp. arrest) & never did find cause, but

they blamed it on carpet fibers; I think it was mold spores released

into the air from under the carpet. Hope this helps you; I wish you

well in your " new " home & hope you can regain some measure of health

there!

Hugs, Cheryl
