Update Regarding Medicare Coverage for Art Therapists Licensed as LCAT’s in the State of NY:

Thank you to all who provided valuable feedback regarding their experiences applying for Medicare coverage as art therapists licensed as LCAT’s.

Your feedback is being consolidated into a document detailing the unanticipated difficulties encountered following national advocacy for art therapy coverage through Medicare.

Please note:

Art Therapy services are a nationally covered service through Medicare.

The problem seems to lie in the recognition of the LCAT within NY State.

Both AATA and NYATA are working together to develop and implement a strategic plan that addresses this oversight to the degree possible to ensure that art therapists in NY are reimbursable as LCATs through Medicare.

We are diligently working on a solution that will take months to resolve.

In the meantime, anyone in the art therapy community with experience applying for Medicare coverage as an LCAT and has been rejected, if you are interested in joining an advocacy visit to Albany, please send me your name and experience.

Additionally, anyone applying and encountering the above difficulty, please keep records of the names, dates, phone numbers of who you called and details of the conversation.

These pieces of information greatly help advocacy efforts.

Thank you,

Michele
