Job Description

Position: Full Time-Margaret’s Place Counselor/Social Worker

Reports To: The Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation Program Supervisor

Location: The Margaret’s Place Social Worker/Counselor will be based in a combined Middle & High School setting in the Bronx.

Summary:

The Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation is working to end the cycle of domestic violence through its comprehensive youth programming. The Margaret’s Place program is a school-based violence intervention and prevention program designed to help students, faculty, and families address violence and traumatic events – not only in school, but also at home and in the community. The Margaret’s Place program addresses the underlying causes of violence and the impact of victimization through a variety of counseling and psycho-educational modalities: an interactive trauma education/violence prevention curriculum; individual and group counseling; a peer leadership program; school staff, parent

and community workshops/outreach; school-wide anti-violence campaigns, and more.

Description:

- Provide individual and group counseling to students exposed to (or perpetrating) violence or abuse

- Deliver trauma education/violence prevention curriculum to 7th grade and 9th grade students. Additional workshops provided to students as needed

- Provide outreach, referrals, and in-school workshops for parents and family members

- Provide outreach, referrals, and in-school workshops for school staff

- Attend school committee and school staff meetings, and develop and maintain relationships and collaborations with school staff.

- Develop, implement & facilitate a weekly peer leadership group, peer leadership fieldtrips, and peer leader run events

- Develop and implement school-wide campaigns and activities promoting messages of safety & respect

- Participate in weekly clinical and administrative supervision

- Participate in weekly staff meetings

- Maintain confidentiality and accurate records and database

- Generate monthly narrative

- Participate in and/or accommodate on-site program research, evaluation activities, and additional site visits.

Qualifications:

- Masters degree in social work, psychology, counseling or creative arts therapy required

- Experience working with middle- or high-school aged adolescents; familiar with issues of trauma (esp. domestic violence/teen relationships abuse), violence prevention, and victimization

- Strong counseling and crisis intervention skills; experience with school-based programming; experience with workshop and/or group facilitation

- Demonstrates ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others

- A strong commitment to providing anti-racist, culturally competent services, as well as a knowledge of systemic issues.

- Ability to work independently and maintain flexibility for working in a demanding school environment.

- Exhibits professional and ethical behavior

- Bi-lingual Spanish/English preferred
