Guest guest
Hi all. I am new to the list. Does anybody have any information, feedback, opinions, personal experience in private schools (high school) for an Asperger teen boy? By the way, we live in The Woodlands, north of Houston, but of course, realize we may have to take him down into Houston. Some background. We have let our son stay in public schools because he likes it there and in some ways has flourished there. Once I figured out the legalities of it, we got him into, first a 504 program, then special education. However the school district does not have staff trained in Asperger, so it didn't help much. They could accommodate him, but were clueless as to providing any type of training or interventions that would help him be more independent or actually overcome his problems. We had an advocate, etc., but it really was hopeless. The lack of training was too pervasive. I think it would have cost tens of thousands to even begin to turn it around. The special education program at his high school was so counterproductive that we actually took him out at the end of last school year, and he has been on his own. It doesn't look like he will earn enough credits to go on to the next year. So, things are coming to a head. He is technically intellectually gifted, but his weak working memory, slow processing speed and executive dysfunction are causing him to barely make it academically. It is questionable whether he will make it through high school. He is also nowhere close to being able to hold a job, even a menial one. He has great difficulty following directions, for starters, and he takes a long time to do things. The private special education schools have always been way out of our budget, but now my parents are willing to help. So, here we are. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
