What is the connection? >> Cheryl, At my first neurological exam 2 years ago my neuro noted that I had two large birthmarks one on foot the other on my ankle. He immediately asked if I had any more with concern in his voice. He said there is a disease associated with having 4 or more of these types of birthmarks it was called Cafe'..... something. I can't recall the exact name.I think it started with an M. Every time I go for an exam he points out those birthmarks. Let me know if you find out any more info on this. While most birthmarks are totalyy unrelated there can be a relationship between birthmarks and certain neuro defects. Most common is the birthmark found on the skin at the sight of a spina bifida or spina bifida occulta. There can also be something called a dermal sinus, which is like a small hole or even looking like an enlarged pore or blister which is actually the site of a spina bifida and communicates with the spinal canal. These are often marked by a darker birthmark or little tuft of hair. Found most often at the base of the spine or the neck or skull. Birthmarks along the spinal structure can alert diagnosticians to the possibility of spinal/cranial abnormalities. It is an indication to look a little deeper. As I said the majority of birthmarks are unrelated, but if one appears along the spinal structure, and there is a question of neuro symptoms it is worth checking in to.
