Re: probiotics and abx

I have to amend my probiotic comment. I once heard Dr. Weil say that some folks can react to probiotics, but I think it is very rare. I would start any new substance slowly. That way, if you are sensitive to it you will either have a very mild reaction or build tolerance and overcome the sensitivity. Never heard any other health professional or literature (of which I've read a boatload) mention reactions to probiotics, though.

I have been into these natural health aides for many years and have never heard of any upper limits on probiotic dosages. It's food based and it's good for ya! Enjoy, and taking it with yogurt is perfect... dairy products "feed" the probiotics and enhance potency and absorbtion. Kay

Thanks for the response folks..

I'm using extra strength Acidephilus..it says to take two tabs each day..I'm new in this probiotic arena. I can't swallow pills so I open the capsules and sprinkle it in yogurt..I'm also quite med phobic and even those natural things worry me cause anything going into our bodies, natural or not, we can have a reaction to.

SO..what strength or dose of probiotic are you folks taking? Any reactions to them?

Thanks

And how about suggestions for post nasal drip?

I'd suggest a saline spray to clean out the nasal passages and use daily. Actually you can use saline spray as often as you need to..it's natural and non addictive.

Also..I've found that if I gargle w/clear water or salt water in the mornings it really helps to clear out my post nasal drip and the mucous that sticks to the back of my throat.

Sandie,

With all the impact of anti – biotics on the gut, I doubt there is a pro-biotic strong enough to do actual harm. Sicne using the SB FlorActiv I now have mostly nearly ‘normal’ bowel after 30 yrs of not...

Also, drink LOTS of water. Helps everything. Hot drink, tea helps bring up phlegm in the morning.

Also, for tummy troubles due to antibiotics. I only had this problem once almost 20 years ago, but it just persisted for about a month, which made it difficult to work or go anywhere. But I stuck to the BRAT diet, bananas, rice, applesauce and tea which helped. I also ate yoghurt and drank a sport drink to keep hydrated. This along with some medication took care of it. I am very careful about what I eat now and since I can't take anti's any more because of immunoglobulin deficiency, just have had thrush, a fungal white coating on my tongue and probably esophagus. I tend to stay away from dairy and don't have any desire to eat anything sweet.

Actually, I have tried the hot water drink when I was sick a few times with infections and it really helps. A friend who had chronic bronchitis (probably really bronchiectasis) suggested it, and at first I though yuck, but it really was very soothing and settled my stomach.

lin, You are lucky you don’t crave sweets – I’ve been told that it is symptom of fungal infection, because it feeds on it. Whether this is sound chem info I don’t know – I think a lot of the time that there really isn’t much knowledge about this interaction – in a lab is rather different to a human body with an infection, and then the infection will determine chem behaviours. What med did you have to take care of ‘it’ (fungal infectn?)

Kay

Craving sweets is a sign of fungal infection? What kind of fungal infection?

Joy,

I don't remember what they gave me about 2 years ago when my internist (before I was diagnosed with bronch) had me do a routine colonoscopy and endoscopy. It was found that my esophagus was full of thrush. I can tell I have it now because my tongue is coated with white. I believe it is usually from taking inhaled steroids. I was using Advair at the time. My inhaled med now is Spireva, which I believe helps a lot with the breathing.

Advair will def cause thrush in your mouth and yes..all the way down your esophogus..it's so critically important to not only rinse but gargle very well after each use.

I've been using Advair now for about 7 years ..I suffered too from painful thrush and I've learned. Since then I havent had any episodes..

Kay,

Re yoghurt – from what I understand that to replace flora damaged by abx, you’d need to eat bucket loads – and that does change things a bit...

However, if it works for you, for as long as it works – do it!

AND DRINK HOT WATER - sounds yuk, but actually not, even more so in hot weather, as the body can assimilate the fluid much more quickly than having to warm up the water. But then, there are times, a refreshing cold drink from the fridge when it’s around the 40 Celsius is not bad!

What med did you have to take care of ‘it’ (fungal infectn?)

Get info on fungal infectns – the bact are bad enough, but fungals can be very hard to shift too. Taking abx favours fungal growth – but not vice versa, so I’m told by a Doc.

Anti oral fungi – clean teeth and tongue w bicarb soda, & good toothpaste too (put some powder in small container/jar (it will solidify with moisture quickly, you’ll figure out using it easily). It is also a good u/arm deodorant, applied w a make-up brush or such-like – dampen your armpit first.

Informed is empowered,

Boy, I sure don't blame you for avoiding those foods! The pulm dr gave me a nasal prescription for post nasal drip because he saw some in the back of my throat, but being the med avoider I am I haven't filled it! I do salt water rinses every day at least once to try to keep infections at bay, but don't have any other ideas about the drip, unfortunately. The dr said it contributes to the lung problems, adding fluid from aspiration, which I've had problems with.

Good suggestions, and I'd add that I recently read in one of my med journals that a study evaluating store bought nasal saline sprays and salt water vs. antibiotics found that plain old home prepared salt water rinses beat out both of the others. The store ones burn my sinuses anyway, no matter what is or isn't in them. Put a little (trial and error for strength) in a small microwavable glass and add some bottled or non-chlorinated water and stir. Micro for fifteen or more seconds to get it as hot as tolerable and use a clean eye dropper to put several droppersful in each nostril. I then go lay down on my back on a couch or bed with my head hanging off and wait for two to four minutes (unless a coughing fit comes on from mucus coming up!). Repeat three times and do as often as needed. During colds or sinus infections I do it five or more times a day, but otherwise only once or twice as it can be irritating. Don't get the salt conc

entration too high or your nostrils will burn and stay irritated, which is not something any of us needs more of! Good luck.

I'd like to ask if the water should be really hot or just lukewarm. Also, I was told to never drink the water straight from the hot faucet because of impurities in it. Do you use bottled water and heat it? Thanks.

Sugar is acidic and it is one of my biggest problem foods for the GERD, but I do dark chocolate and some baked desserts. Candy other than the less sweet dark choc is out though, the pain later isn't worth it.

Actually tap water is generally better than bottled water, because it is just as pure (unless your community has a problem) and usually has fluoride in it. It should be hot, like when you drink tea or coffee.
