Guest guest
I was wondering if anyone has been prescribed fish oil for inflammation and/or other health issues and used Lovaza (formerly Omacor), a prescription. My brief research indicates that it is purified to remove environmental toxins and that it would be more cost effective for me than OTC because I am supposed to take a lot of it. Does anyone know of any downsides to this " medication? " Thanks,
Guest guest
Here is my opinion... SINCE YOU DO NOT NEED A PRESCRIPTION TO BUY FISH OIL, WHY DO IT? For example, I have read repeatedly that independent labs testing fish oil for sale at stores like Walgreens, COSTCO, etc found that brands like their house brands are as pure or even purer than more expensive brands and as free of heavy metal and environmental toxicants. It is SAFER to take fish oil in capsules than to eat fish from stores. Typical cost, under $10 a bottle. High EPA/DHA fish oil is usually around twice as much.. Even if your insurance DOES pay for it I think its wiser to just buy it OTC because in the long run, these high costs are paid by all of us one way or another. Guest guest
A combination of factors make a prescription a good choice for me. I have been purchasing fish oil(and numerous other supplements)OTC for years, but now my doctor wants to increase my dose which will make it quite expensive. A sick family of four is costly, my doctor has specifications on strength of the fish oil and I am not well enough to either run from store to store or do extensive research on every product. My out of pocket expense will be less and they will deliver it to my door. I am sure you didn't intend it, but I find your response to be judgmental. Each of us has many factors to weigh in trying to attain better health. So, my real question is whether anyone has had any experience with this product and if they are willing to share it. --- In , LiveSimply <quackadillian@...> wrote: > > Here is my opinion... > SINCE YOU DO NOT NEED A PRESCRIPTION TO BUY FISH OIL, WHY DO IT? > > For example, I have read repeatedly that independent labs testing fish > oil for sale at stores like Walgreens, COSTCO, etc found > that brands like their house brands are as pure or even purer than > more expensive brands and as free of > heavy metal and environmental toxicants. Does anyone know of > any downsides to this " medication? " My doc prescribed 4 grams per day, for high cholesterol. That's four big-ass pills in the morning. It tends to kick my blood sugar up about 15 points, probably from all the gelcap coating. Haven't noticed any bad side effects. I hear that too much of Omega 3, without the other omegas to balance it out, can be bad for you, but dunno too much about that. Doc said the amount I'm taking each day is equal to a whole bottle of the over-the-counter fish oil supplements.
