Guest guest
, TiO2 is most commonly used as the white pigment in expensive paints. Because it is GRAS (generally recognized as safe), it is also mixed with the powdered sugar that is sprinkled onto packaged donuts. The TiO2 keeps the powder white because powdered sugar gets saturated with oil from the donuut and the powder turns gray. TiO2 stays white even if wet with oil (because it has a higher index of refraction!); it is used in other foods as well to make them white. " APPLICATION OF THE PHOTOCATALYTIC CHEMISTRY OF TITANIUM DIOXIDE TO DISINFECTION AND THE KILLING OF CANCER CELLS " is a paper at: http://www.nrel.gov/vehiclesandfuels/ancillary_loads/pdfs/cancer_cells.pdf entitled: (Google: UV, titanium dioxide, catalyst) Unfoturnately, I cannot think of any circumstances under which such chemistry could be useful to anyone suffering from any illness. The UV needed to activate the catalyst is damaging. There are devices out there that use this technology to eliminate VOC's in the air but the applications (actual consumer devices) are nothing more than toys. The technology works in the lab with very high UV flux, lots of catalyst surface area and low air flow rates but the consumer devices have inadequate surface area, low UV flux and high air flows. Save your money and forget about TiO2 gimmicks; and don't eat packaged, sugared donuts to get the TiO2 because not enough UV will penetrate your stomach. C.
