Guest guest
This week has been driving me crazy. I have worked very hard to keep by bg in line. To my shock I have been running between 250-290 all week with occasional dips--never made a connection with the weather until I read about it on this list. I guess it really is true that the heat and humidity affect bg--I just don't get it. Always something new with this disease. Guest guest
You know KC yesterday it was incredibly hot and my feet and legs began to swell and I started retaining fluid, I immediately began drinking a lot of water but my bs shot up really high and I had to take a shot to help bring it down. Mike and I tried to figure out what I had to cause it. I am on low carb diet and had nothing illegal and I kinda worried about it. Do you think it was the heat? We had to come in yesterday it was to hot to be outside. I did not know that heat could cause that. Today I stayed in all day and kept the house dark so it would stay cool and did a lot better as a matter of fact bs were 111. Mike got out on tractor and liked to over done it. Made him come in and cool off he took bath and slept for 5 hours. Shelia
Guest guest
Dear Bill, So sorry to hear the heat is " getting you down " . Bad joke! Anyhow, I really hadn't thought about how the heat affected my Bg level. You've made a good point. I hope you won't have to suffer too much longer. I'm below you in Penna. and it's 98degrees right now. -moderator
Guest guest
Here in Pittsburgh we are in the midst of a heat wave with very high humidity. I dont mind the heat but man that humidity is a killer--makes me want to run back home to Phoenix. Yes, apparently the heat has some effect on bg-I dont really understand it but I know I have been legal and my bg has been high--maybe my mid week we willhave some relief. Guest guest
Yup..EVERYTHING effects BG. Ohh..and it is unpredictable as heck. And what works this week to keep it down may not work next week. Food items that have zero effect, will blow the numbers next month. I quit worrying about that kind of stuff years ago. I never look at my BS at a one time shot. I shoot for 15 day averages (just like the stock market). My goal is to keep it at or below 150 as a 15 day average. JS in L.A. > From: KCKELSO@... > > This week has been driving me crazy. Guest guest
Even though it gets really hot here in NM it's a dry heat! very different, and here in Taos at night it is about 55! Not the perfect climate, but I like it better than the heat and humidity of other places. Silly me, I'm going to the Rochester area next week to visit my family. Oh well, it's only a week and it's on the lake! >From: KCKELSO@... > >So where is the perfect climate in america???Just a general question. Guest guest
Tried to do to bed and could not. Just tested my levels again and I am 233. That is very high for me which usually I am below 100. No wonder I am having so many problems. The heat is really taking its toll. Doctor called and he says not much that can be done till it gets cooler. If I still have problems in morning he will admit me to the hospital just so I can be where the air is more controlled. Too bad we can't get our a/c to work better than it is doing now. Guest guest
I am curious-if heat affects bg the way it does-then does the extreme cold have the same effect-even though the heat/humidity plays havoc I don't think I am ready to move to Alaska yet. Guest guest
Bill - So sorry to hear of your heat reaction. It's hot and humid in Massachusetts too. I hadn't thought about heat affecting my bg but I am certainly going to be more careful. We have two room air conditioners and a few fans to circulate the air. Weather prediction is for it to hit 100 today. I have been having trouble with allergies although the tylenol allergy sinus is a big help. I am puffy and like you have been drinking a lot of water. I have been doing the t'ai chi deep slow breathing exercises which seems to help.[Maybe I should say I am a more peacful puffy person!] I suspect the heat and struggling against it is stressful enough to affect the blood sugar. Mine is a little higher than I was expecting yesterday. Keep us posted. This too shall pass. We're rooting for you. - Pat At 01:10 AM 7/5/99 -0400, you wrote: > > >Tried to do to bed and could not. Guest guest
I haven't been bothered by the heat (at least my bg's havent!... *I* have but maybe it's my diet? dunno ) I would say at least drink extra water (if you have no restrictions on fluids) to make up for dehydration. Guest guest
Could you have been fighting off an infection? A cold or bacterial infection can cause bg's to shoot up. Guest guest
Sorry you are having such a rough time, Bill. Are you drinking a lot of water in the heat? It really helps me to keep my levels in check in the heat, and my father also finds drinking a lot relieves his asthma. Good luck! Let me know how you are doing! in Cincinnati
Guest guest
KC - Many times heat effects the bg because of dehydration. Try this - if your level is high, drink 32 oz of water (or as much as you can stand) then check again in 15 minutes. I was running high one night and called the Urgent Care at my doctor's office. The told me to do this, and it really helped. By the way, you don't have to keep checking. The only reason to check would be to confirm to yourself that the water really works! Apparently if you are perspiring and not replenishing the water, the glucose will get really concentrated. in Cincinnati
