strain is not contagious, said a Bethlehem Area School district

official.

The girl, a student at Broughal Middle School, became sick on

Wednesday or Thursday of last week, said Superintendent ph .

He said test results showed the meningitis is neither viral or

bacterial, the more severe of the two forms of meningitis.

The infection is an inflammation of fluid surrounding the brain and

spinal cord.

today said the girl, whom he declined to identify, is not yet

back in school, but is expected to return soon.

He said the Bethlehem Health Bureau has been notified about the test

results.

Meningitis cases are often caused by viruses or bacteria, but may

also be related to fungi and other organisms, according to The

Nemours Foundation's Center for Children's Health Media.
