Guest guest
FYIFrom: Pamela Baker Sent: Friday, March 09, 2012 2:28 PMPlease pass on: Education Summit: Communities in Partnership The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part B (IDEA-Part requires states and local education agencies (LEA) to take steps to address disproportionate representation of racial andethnic groups in special education. The statute and regulations for the IDEA-Part B include important changes in how states and LEAs now must address disproportionate representation in special education. LEAs examination should include an extensive examination of disproportionality and more extensive remedies where findings of disproportionality occur. However, this is not just a special education problem. Disproportionality occurs in other programs also, such as child protective services, juvenile justice, and health care. The collaborative Education Summit 2012 is designed to:review the Texas Story on disproportionality in our states systems;reveal community resources that are available and may be underutilized;realize schools’ possibilities by taking a look at an education perspective;recognize the impact on youth by listening to a personal account;reduce disproportionality and disparities by taking a closer look at attitudinal and policy barriers;reaffirm your commitment to address disproportionality and disparities by making a work plan and continuing to learn more about the issues. Speakers will include: · Joyce , Associate Deputy Executive Commissioner for the Center for Elimination of Disproportionality and Disparities· Debra Fowler, Assistant Director, Texas Appleseed· Dr. s and Margery Freeman, People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond-Undoing Racism Trainers· Ward, Office of Educator Quality Project Manager Cultural Proficiency & Inclusiveness , Austin ISDJana Lilly, Special Education Director, Austin ISD This training is at no cost and includes a working lunch.
