Guest guest
Carol, found these cute Manatee Greeting Cards online. http://www.cafepress.com/buy/florida/-/pv_design_prod/pg_7/p_storeid.75102443/pN\ o_75102443/id_14555716/opt_/fpt_/c_666/ If you are serious, there are some Groundhog Day boxed Greeting cards online. http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/community/viewdetails.asp?CARDID=124643 I once read that the fable of the Mermaid was created from hallucinations of drunken sailors at sea when they saw the Manatee, because of the Mermaid's tail being like a Manatee's tail. I don't know if this is really true, but it made sense to me. You have your cute Manatees, we have the lovely " Elephant Seal " seen this time of year mating on our shorelines. http://www.inn-california.com/sanfrancisco/SanMateo/Pescadero/anonuevo.html Try getting up close and personal to one of those! Guest guest
Hi dear Carol, keeper of the lovable Manatee. One question? Are you concerned with Alligators lurking under a dug out place in the side of the River Bank? They are worse than Sharks. I was just wondering if you have encountered any in the river? I did when swimming with a group of kids. We got out of that water as fast as we could. He was a big one. Mama was on a picnic with family when a little girl was swept off the bank and never seen again. Sharks stay in the water but Gators don't. I guess I am a worry wart about kids. Love you a lot dear one, have fun kayaking and visiting the Manatee. Guest guest
JANET, Cute cards! Thank you! There were some manatees up by our yard but the 4 and 5 year olds weren't patient enough fo watch for them. They actually scared one of them with their splashing, but they didn't even notice. Normally it would be too cold for the kids to swim, but with the warm water discharge from the power plant, it is not too bad, even for the natives here! Besides manatees, there are islands that Imogene remembers that have an infestation of monitor lizards. They get under homes and chew on the electrical wiring. They can be very vicious and a danger to small animals. Boca Grande is where they are the most prevalent, but they do swim, so surrounding isalnds are taking a hit, also. and Barbara Bush often vacation on Boca Grande. It is a very samll town with a really homey feeling. Kennebunkport is actually much more commercial than Boca Grande. It is sunny today, and I hope Jim will put a waverunner in for me to go see the manatees. He has launched a huge outdoor project and so he may not be enthused about getting a boat out. We started Millie on a new supplement- DHA. It seems to be helping. It is supposed to help remove ALZ plaques in the brain. She actually remembers yesterday and is talking about the walk she took around the yard. I essentially crashed from 3:30 yesterday afternoon until 7;00 this a.m. except for feeding Millie dinner last night. i was just too pooped to be up and she got herself to bed just fine. If she never gets out of her p.j.'s, there is not much in the getting ready process. School starts tomorrow, and I know it will be a shock to both teachers and kids alike. Coming back after two weeks will seem like cruel and unusual punishment. Starting school at 7:oo a.m. is not my idea of a great time, but at least I can stay after a bit without Jim yelling at me. Enough idle chit-chat! Thanks to all of you for being my link to civilization during so much imposed imprisonment here at the house. catch you guys later, Carol > the grands came over and although we were going to see manatees, the > boy threw up and we aborted the trip. > > I did let them play in the water and wear themselves out a little so > they would nap when they got home. > > Jim and my son visited on one bank of the river, and the kids and I > kayaked to the other bank and they played in the sand and eventually > were wet from head to toe. > > I am tired enough to nap myself. > > I am taking adderall, and I didn't get to sleep until after four this > a.m. > > I was on Provigil for a while but it made me too grumpy to teach. Guest guest
Imogene, Several times a year we call the trappers to remove a nuisance gator. Having so many dogs, we are on constant guard. The grands are 4, 5, 5 (fosters and adopted) and they stayed in less than two feet of water the entire time. We do watch for gators and have a wonderful Christmas card of the boys sitting on top of a 12 foot gator that was shot in the river, back when it was legal. I do worry about gators, but I love my river! The manatees are my favorite! Sharks usually don't come up this far. More nature, later! Guest guest
Carol, I am glad you have dogs. They are very good at knowing when there is a threat. Gators come right out of the water to get what they want. If I lived there I would love it too. We do learn to live with them. We are certainly in agreement all around.
