Hi There, Some centres are now transplanting people past the age of 65. The Mayo Clinic, I believe it was Mayo transplanted a man in his early 70s. This was a few years back. I'd encourage you to join SecondWind transplant group and I'll send the details. The cut off for a double lung transplant is sometimes 60 (but, not necessarily now a days) and for a single age 65, but again not necessarily these days. People with bronchiectasis require a double lung transplant. Like your mom I often grow three or four different lung bacteria and my lungs have been quite damaged. I'm on oxygen, but do my best to get out of the house, its not easy, but always try. These transplants are done for advanced/end-stage lung disease, but are worthwhile. In advanced cases of bronchiectasis options unfortunately are often more limited. Its important to see specialists, to get second and third opinions, etc. Does your mom have an infectious disease

specialists that is familiar with treating bronchiectasis? My infectious disease specialists has been a life saver. He’s up on treating my infections and has done research in the area of bronchiectasis. I’d also recommend a pulmonologist that specialises in cystic fibrosis - not that your mom has this, but treatments for bronchiectasis often come from the field of CF - they are passed down, so a pulmonologist familar with cystic fibrosis would more likely be up to date on the latest treatments. Hugs, :0) Liz CaSak NY wrote: I have been reading the posts about a lung transplant. The one thing that jumps out at me is it appears that the lung transplant is the end stage of this disease? If so, what happens when someone isnt able to be put on a list due to age and condition? It sounds like for some, they are having just as hard of a time as my mom with the bleeding. My mom has been in the hospital since last friday 3/30/07 after having a broc scope done. The have had her on a total of 5 anitbatics. The dr said she had 3 different bactreria's growing in her lungs and then they said she has pnemnia and then they said she only had 2 bacteria's growing. From what I'm reading, it sounds like skipping the broc scope and going on antibatics is the best way to go. I know they did this on my mom to see where her bleeding was coming from.

That's when they found the large pocket in her right lung. I have to say, at this point, it doesnt look good for my mom. I get the fact that positive thinking has to be maintained, but at the same time, my sister and I have to take care of business etc. I just want to to know straight out without all the smoke and mirrors if this is the end/final stage so I know what we need to do for our mom. Again, thanks to everyone who is taking time to answer my ?'s.__________________________________________________________Mortgage rates near historic lows. Hi There, I'm on blood thinners - warfarin, have trouble with my veins, and know of others taking blood thinners, who have diabetes and even heart problems who have made the transplant list. Your mom really needs to be evaluated by a transplant team before any decisions are made. I know of people in their 50s and 60s (through a lung transplant support group) who have received lungs or who are waiting for a transplant. Hugs, :0) LizCaSak NY wrote: HiI don't know much about about the lung transplant program in reference to if there are different guidelings in each state or not. The dr told us (in the state of kansas) that the cut off is around 55 yrs old. My mom also has an irregalur heart beat and is on blood thinners which doesn t help the blooding. She also has low blood sugar and other misc health concerns. I welcome the advice I'm getting since I'm trying to figure this all out, so thank you.<html><DIV> & nbsp;</DIV></html>>From: "julieryanparker" <julieryanparker>>Reply-To: bronchiectasis >To: bronchiectasis >Subject:

Hi ,

Do you have time to evaluate after all the tests – it’s just that lung transplant is listed as a CAUSE of bronch...! But maybe not always, I don’t know. It’s pretty drastic and major surgery to undergo, and if you decide, our prayers are with you for good acceptance of the transplant, and good recovery...

If you have a chance, do try and take time out to think everything over,

I just have to share my experience re organ donations. When my husband died 25 yrs ago I donated his eyes. They gave two different people his eyes. They wouldn't divulge who the recipients were, but they said there were two very grateful people out there because of this. There's always something that can be used.

Thanks, Sandie, I appreciate, as I’m sure others do, your input re transplant – the one thing that is common to this blinking disease is that it IS so variable! As for donating organs – I wouldn’t inflict my lungs on anyone!, and I don’t think my other organs are too good either after 55 yrs of infx and medications... Maybe next time around, if I have the chance...

Oh Joy !

when we talk organ donation there's more to it than just our lungs..you'd be surprised what you have to offer to another..really

Skin..bone..cornia..and a host of other things..just because we have our own deformaties and malfunctions ..trust me..there's something you have that would most definitely help another live a better quality of life..

They said it is too early to do a transplant. We are going to keep doing Pulmonary Function Tests at home and keep an eye on things. Testing wasn't too bad. Yes, I know transplant is a cause of bronchiolitis obliterans. They don't know why I have it. It's also called Popcorn Workers Lung from exposure to the artificial butter in microwave popcorn. Take care!
